Hi all,

My wife has a 2013 XA40 Rav4 XLE AWD that we just installed 2020 XA50 Rav4 TRD Off Road wheels on. The wheels are OEM Toyota and came with the OEM tire pressures monitoring (TPM) sensors installed.

The TPM light regularly comes on, and doesn't always clear even after filling the tires with 33 PSI of air and depressing and holding the TPM reset button. I suspect this is happening because the TPM sensors on the wheels may be of a newer generation than the TPM system in the vehicle. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could make the existing TPM sensors in the wheels work with the TPM system in the vehicle?

Thank you,

It could be the sensor batteries are dead.

Did the installer input the sensor ID numbers when they swapped? The ID numbers are printed on the sensors, so if you don’t have them they’ll need to dismount the tires to read them, although it may be possible to deflate & break the bead to get a look.

Lastly, the sensors need to be 315 MHz. There are others that wouldn’t be compatible.

The 4th generation RAV4 has a TPMS reset button below the dash. After the sensors are programmed in the computer and the tires filled to the proper pressure, you must push that button. That tells the computer that the current pressure is the right one to use to determine when to warn of low pressure.

Like @crisps replied, the TRD sensor serial numbers need to be registered to your old RAV4. I suspect they are compatible, just not programmed in. If you park anywhere near your old wheels, your car will sync up with them and the TPMS light will go out and stay off for a short while. Then it will come back on when you are out of range for a while.
