i'd like to tow a tiny 600 lb teardrop trailer with my 2005 rav4. how do i get a towing kit attached? do i buy one online (if so recommendations? and have someone attach it? or is it something a dealership could do entirely?

You can order a hitch locally like U-Haul or any place online such as etrailer.com along with the trailer wiring.
The dealer is an expensive route especially for such an older vehicle.
Install should take under and an hour by removing the two tow brackets at the back. Where the tow bracket goes under the car is where the hitch bolts go into the same threads. (no drilling).
Trailer wiring takes one hour and you can get plug and play kits.

I recently installed the hitch. This is the one I bought..
CURT 13524 Class III Receiver

I would add that the passenger side bolts are a little difficult to get off and on because the muffler sort of comes in the way. A wrench which is long might ease up the problem. I didnt raise the car, but that might help too as laying down on the floor and fighting the bolt was not very easy..
