I see in Toyota website that all new Toyotas come with 2 year Toyota care vs the Se Distributor add on if Toyoguard. If I get it free on a new car why would they upcharge you on the Toyoguard? Can’t figure this one out.

Toyotaguard is a South East Toyota port add on. South East Toyota is the Toyota distributer for the South East US. I avoided the Toyotaguard upcharge a few years ago by stating I would wait for a vehicle without it. This may be difficult to do in today's sellers market.

You may also be able to avoid the approximately $1500 South East Toyota destination charge by buying out of their territory.

I was not familiar with Toyoguard. So, I did a quick internet check. Basically, it only covers the same maintenance items covered by Toyota Care for the first 2 1/2 years of ownership, except that it extends that coverage for another 2 1/2 years and adds a couple of items like paint sealant and fabric protector (which cost the dealer very little).

The Toyoguard Platinum package would be worth buying if a) you knew that you were going to keep your car for at least 5 years and b) the cost of the Toyoguard was under about $200. Otherwise, it is just another way for dealers to pad their profits on the sale of a vehicle. The oil changes and tire rotations for the extra 30 months should cost the owner of a vehicle about $175, and the paint sealant and fabric protector will do no more for you than will a good wax job and some do-it-yourself fabric treatment.

Dealers know that they can sell a car to customer for a very minimal profit, but, if they can convince the customer to buy things like an extended warranty, a pre-paid maintenance plan, wheel and tire protection, nitrogen filled tires, etc., they can turn the deal into one of their most profitable deals. Typically, those add-on items have a mark-up of over several hundred percent over what they actually cost the dealer.
