Kyodo News [via Yahoo! Asia News]: Toyota's SUV excels in pedestrian safety in Japan

Monday April 24, 10:39 PM

(Kyodo) _ The Toyota RAV4 sport-utility vehicle has won the highest level-5 rating in pedestrian safety assessment by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for fiscal 2005, the ministry said Monday.
It is the first time any vehicle model has won a level-5 mark in pedestrian safety since the ministry started the assessment in fiscal 2003, according to the ministry.

The number of models with level-4 pedestrian safety ratings increased to six from one in the previous year, the ministry added.

The ministry tested for shock to a pedestrian's head in a frontal collision using dummies at a speed of 44 kilometers per hour.

Meanwhile, 11 of the 20 selected Japanese vehicle models won the highest rating of six stars in collision safety assessments, while 16 models won the highest rating in front-seat passenger safety, the ministry said.

In the assessment, the ministry implemented front and side collision tests to rate the safety of drivers and front-seat passengers for the 20 models.

The high-rating winners in both driver and front-seat passenger safety include the 660-cc SUV Jimny of Suzuki Motor Corp., and the Edix minivan and Step WGN of Honda Motor Co.
