I have paid a deposit on a 2025 Rav4 hybrid XLE premium with a VIN due to arrive at the dealer in the L.A. area between March 4th and the 24th. I have seen posts where people comment on the location of their vehicle prior to delivery. My vehicle is being shipped from Japan. Does anyone know if and how I can track the progress of my vehicle online? Thanks!

I’ll let someone else answer this question—I could not figure out how to track my new RAV4 PHEV when I acquired it in December. The posts I saw where this was done were all more than a year old and there was chatter that Toyota had tightened up access to its inventory system so that the feat could not be duplicated.

Please take note...here in florida two years ago I ordered a 2023 RAV4 and the dealer notified me that it arrived early...interestingly I checked the VIN and it was not the same car I ordered! Beware

The dealer can track it, the old interface that was sort of public is changed/gone.

Note that the VIN you get initially will be changed later when it is actually being built, for sure when it leaves the plant.

Go to the dealership, they can look it up... the dates are not exact... the boat departure and arrival are usually accurate, the rest is sort of fuzzy...

It was not possible to track the car, but the dealer informed me now and then by telephone when he had become some news about the car.
I didn't track my shipment but my fleet salesman told me every step from scheduled and parts available, to on the production line, to cleared the factory, to on the truck, to cleared customs between Canada and the US to arrival. And it was over a 4th of July weekend and I had grandkids commitments and couldn't pick it up until a day or two later. This was 2019 and he had access to the database used by dealers and the factory. He had been there for years and knew the tricks. I had bought a 2012 from him.

And then just after he gave me a quote on my next car the dealership was sold and he left. So I used the quote and a local dealer honored it.

A motivated sales staff can, maybe yours doesn't want to put in the effort.

Thanks for the replies. In my case the car is supposed to arrive at the dealer between the 4th and 24th of March, so I assume it’s already been built. With shipping from Japan taking at least 15 days, plus whatever time it takes for the ship to unload in Long Beach and time it takes to add all the goodies they add to the vehicle at the port before it hits the dealer’s lot, the car could be on the ship now or very soon. I’ll just check in with the dealer every week or so until I know it’s here.

I am on the East Coast, but ours was a J VIN and was still in Japan at assembly when I placed the deposit on it. It was "at sea" roughly one month, the ships from Japan make many port stops before reaching America. At least on the East coast.

Once it arrived at the port of NJ yard it took about 2 weeks for the port options to be installed and loaded onto truck (or sometimes rail then truck) and arrived at our dealer lot. We drove several states away for our dealership to get the best deal and find the exact color/trim/options we wanted.

At the time (2023) there was a 3rd party website you could use called Toyota Tracker that would tie into Toyota's API and you could get the same info as your dealership. It seems Toyota has changed the API and the website has since stopped functioning.

Your best bet is to get a good relationship with your sales associate and ask him to check the Dealer Daily software they have and notify you of a status change.

We did that and used Toyota Tracker at the time and both were spot on. All in all it was about 6 weeks from the VIN build month/day (not a temp VIN) to getting dropped off at the dealership. Again this was East coast in the Central/North East region. Other regions have different ports and procedures, such as Toyota South East (SET).

This guy kinda goes into the weeds on the topic. It's on a tundra forum, but the same general process applies to all Toyota's in the US.

When I got my 2007 RAV4 (back in 2007), I got shipping updates the old school method.

When searching for a car that matched the specs I wanted, it took the dealer a little while, but eventually he said:
I found it. I found your exact car. But... it's still on the boat from Japan.

I had it a week later, in Michigan.

The VIN on the RAV4 XSE that I got in December is the same as I had in the original notification. This allowed me to contact the insurance and have everything set before taking the delivery of the vehicle.

Yep, I got the VIN as soon as I got into the system, and I was told it was probably temporary.

You probably got the revised, real one. I made buddies at the dealership and actually sat down at the terminal they use and clearly on the Toyota system... I had the vin way before the actual assembly started.

I mentioned that so that people knew this step indeed exists in the full "journey"... most people do not get to see that ...

Does anybody know if there is a way to track a VIN, if the dealership's webpage shows the vehicle as "in transit".
Back in 2019 an experienced salesman told me without prompting when it was on the truck, when it crossed the border from Canada and when its ETA at the dealer was.

Where is yours coming from?

When I ordered my 2025 RAV4 hybrid XLE premium on 2/7/25, I was told the car was built and I received the specs with the VIN and was told it would arrive at the dealer between 3/4 and 3/24. By 3/3 I learned the vehicle had arrived at the port of Long Beach. That’s where they add accessories like roof racks, door edge guards etc. Around that time I was told the vehicle could arrive between 3/10 and 3/21. A few days later I was told it would arrive the 20th or 21st. The last prediction was the 19th and the actual delivery date to the dealer was on 3/17.

So the original time frame was correct but the more recent updates were not accurate.

You can't track it directly online as a customer, but your dealer can see detailed shipping info in Toyota’s internal system. Ask them for updates using your VIN. If they give you the vessel name, you can track the ship on sites like MarineTraffic.com. Once the car reaches the U.S., the Toyota app may show status updates if the vehicle is assigned to you.
