For any of you RAVers that are feeling HELPFUL :D , please don't forget to click on our "View unanswered posts" link, that's the entrance page of our forums, directly under the "View posts since last visit and "View your posts" links 8)

We've currently got close to 300 unanswered posts! Though NOT all of them need an answer... we've still got quite a few RAVers out there looking for help :(

Thanks much 8)

I have had a quick look (And tried to help some) - most of these posts are over 2 months old with no replies..... are you able to automatically delete them after a certain time and post a PM to the originator so they know their post is deleted???

This way they can either repost the question to make it current again or re-word it some how to appeal to more people?

Thanks for stepping up AussieRAVer 8) Yes... we do have the option of automaticly deleting (pruning) messages that have 0 replies... after a set number of days. I've been reluctant to implement this feature... as it does NOT notify the message originator of the impending deletion. I guess if it was implemented... it wouldn't take long for our members to become aware of this feature. Plus... I could add mention of it on our FAQ page. :)

Thanks for the input 8)

I think the issue with answering a really old post is that aside from bringing up a really old post, i think the originator may not be checking for answers anymore if it is so old, so the option of notifying the originator about the deletion would encourage him/her to forget about it or repost it again and check back. I agree completely with AussieRaver

Yes... that would be a GREAT way to handle it. :) But... with over 600 unanswered messages... sending each member a message BEFORE deleting the message... keeping track of replies... and to which message the reply is concerning... would be a lot of work :? If we had an AUTOMATED system to do this, it would be feasable. :) I've searched most of the PHPBB sites for this type of MOD... with no luck :(

As I dont know the coding for PHPBB, is it possible to modify the code to send a personal message then delete it???

If you are able to delete these posts are you able to automatically send personal messages to posts with 0 replys after a set number of days??

If so, you could send the message, asking the user to either delete it or repost and then set the delete code in action a week later??

Kelly,

I have been looking at PHP hack sites and come up with one for MULTIPLE CHOICE POLLS.... this may come in handy??

Looks interesting 8) I like to try to use only the phpbb.com site for mods (but NOT always :) ). I found the same mod here  http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=79099 Looks like it might have some ISSUES... but when I get a chance I'll sort through the 20+ pages of messages and maybe give it a test run.

Thanks :D

Back to the unanswered posts - I had a look at the oldest one here - JANUARY 2005 - surely there is no need for that long ago - Maybe you should implement the delete after x days code but make it 3 months or something and just let everyone know what the new procedure is... This would free up some DB space.... and probably make searches a tad quicker.... (600 less to search)

Maybe set up a poll in the announcements and see what everyone thinks?

Come one people! Let's help eachother out! What happened?
I feel like two yrs ago everything just stopped and things slowed down. Help a member out and click the "unanswered post" section and reply with something useful. We would all benefit from it.

I think what you might find with the old post originators is that if they do not receive any kind of feedback they may just say screw this site, nobody answers(or answered), so I'll go elsewhere. And who could blame them?

replying to a 5 year old post:eek: ... looks like Links2 has too much time to dig around :)
I can say that nowadays very few posts go unanswered; no stats to back it up, just my experience.

Hmmm, not really sure what you mean by that...
"Too much time to dig around"?

If I see a specific title & question and have a clue I usually try to answer when I'm not on the road somewhere.

I often bypass the "new member introductions" w/o a model year mentioned in the title.

Altho I just did answer one, I almost always ignore zero-information titles like "Help."
