UPDATE JUNE 2022:
I had a new battery put in my RAV4 this week and I am no longer getting the EPB Shift Interlock message on startup at all. Before the new battery was installed I was getting this message 9 out of 10 times on every start regardless of outside temperature.
This message is definitely related to a low performing 12v battery. If you have this message, get your battery checked to see if it can be restored or if it needs to be replaced.
I blame the crappy DCM Toyota started using in the 2020 RAV4 for draining so many batteries.
Original post below:
Over the past few months my Rav4 has started displaying this message whenever I start the vehicle. When the Rav4 animation starts to fade out in the instrument cluster and before the rest of the MID loads, this appears briefly.
I do use the shift-linked parking brake where it applies the brake when entering park, and releases the brake when shifting out of park. This appears to be the message saying the system is enabled when you toggle it on manually.
I've had the dealership check it and they were no help.
The parking brake works normally and engages/disengages on it's own just fine. I'm just confused why the car feels the need to tell me it's enabled each time I start it.
I've checked in Techstream and the vehicle has no errors or codes present. I've tried toggling the auto EPB feature on and off a few times and the message still pops up. The strange thing is maybe 2 times out of 10, the message does not appear at all.
Has anyone else seen this in their Rav4 or have any ideas why mine just randomly started to inform me this is turned on each time I start the car?
You can hear the different "ding" tone if you have your seatbelt buckled before you start the car.
