This thing made a horrendous noise when trying to pull away from a stop sign, both in forward and reverse. You could hear the gears grinding, like a new driver learning how to shift gears on a manual transmission. Our transmission shop said it is usually the underdrive that fails, and parts are well over $700US. They install a rebuilt Toyota transmission, so that is what we did. The tech who got the job is not the fastest but he is thorough and has very few comebacks. The information we have says to drop the engine and transmission as an assembly. He left the engine in, and was able to remove the transmission without all that extra work.

According to our transmissions hop, these transmissions are dropping like flies. That is something I don't want to hear because my wife drives a 2010 I4 AWD.

Trans failure is rare according to this site other than 2001- 2002-2003 ... 2010 has none.

I'd be leery of any trans shop that says something like this. There's no evidence to suggest that, that I'm aware of.
