Size is 22½ millimeter.......no, there are no 22½ millimeter sockets......you need to use the correct lug nut wrench which came with the vehicle.

The ugly lug nut started out as a 22mm size......and Toyota decided to make it look pretty by wrapping it in sheet metal which increased it's size slightly.

i just tested it with a 21mm socket. it fits but i gotta push it in hard and then turn. As for the 12x1.5 nut, the socket went in pretty smooth Lol. Interesting, now that youve mentioned that theyre 22mm. I see the difference.

It's not a 22-millimeter socket. Unless you have an odd model that is 20+ years old, the lug nuts are 21-millimeters.

I've worked on many different cars over the years and can tell you that Toyota's lug nuts are 21-millimeter 99% of the time. 5th Gen Rav4s and 4th Gen Rav4s are 21mm.

The reason a 22mm socket fit better than the 21mm socket is not because the lug nut is a 22mm. The lug nuts on most modern vehicles are a two-piece nut, meaning they are a steel nut with a chrome cap. When corrosion starts to form under the cap, it bulges out and prevents the proper socket from fitting on it. It is best to replace the lug nuts with a solid version, so you do not have the issue in the future.

Just go to any auto parts store or research online for lug nuts that are solid, meaning they don't have that chrome cap. They generally are a little more than the chrome cap ones but will give you piece of mind knowing that you can get your wheels off. Dorman makes good solid lug nuts. Try looking for that brand.

The metal cladding that's on the lug nut swells over time depending on where you live and some of them become a 22mm. All of my toyotas started life as 21mm lug nuts but here in the rust belt, at least one lug nut per wheel becomes 22mm after 5-7 years or so.

I have found this to be the case. My Rav4 doesn't currently have the issue. When I got my Camry about a year ago and rotated the tires the 21mm socket had a hard time going on and off. I purchased new lug nuts and all is normal again. My Rav has lived its life here in the northern midwest and has 44,000 on it; my Camry lived in Texas and came up here about two years ago and has 76,000 miles on it now...both made in same month and year.
