I've got 71,000 miles on an '01 Rav. At what point would you guys recommend changing the timing belt and water pump? To this point I haven't put much money into this car, except for oil changes. Are there any crucial maintenance that I would need to do at this point? Brakes? Thanks guys.

I have the "Owners Manual Supplement" 2001 in front of me so I will list what it says for the maintenance items people frequently ask about.

Timing Belt (Specifies BELT doesn't mention that its a chain) needs to be replaced every 72 months or 152,000 kms (95,000 miles).

Check this out for other items:http://rav4world.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2384&highlight=

In the supplement it specifically lists the models and under the RAV 4 that is what it says. Black and white. Can't always believe what you read.

Good link! Now that we have that cleared up, we won't have to replace as often. A Timing Chain however will "Stretch" and will need to eventualy be adjusted.

This should give some peace-of-mind. Look at what goes into building a Toyota engine.http://www.toyota.ca/cgi-bin/WebObjects/WWW.woa/8/wo/Home.TMMC- Go to "How We Build" then "Sub Assembly Shops" Choose Powertrain.
