Based on the limited information, it sounds like a throwout bearing in the tranny.

Ditto, on Wayne's opinion.

Is that the factory clutch? How many miles (oops, kilometers) on it?
Unfortunately it sounds like it is about time to drop the tranny. Having no experience with these Toyota transaxles, I can't say what would be involved.

This my first post here although I must admit that I am
watching this forum every day from quite a while now.

Hello everybody.

@jamie - I have exactly the same problem. I first heard
this squealing noise last Oct when my car had about
12,000km on the clock. Booked it in at the local garage
exactly the same day where they admited there is a
strange noise (more like a squealing as advised above)
comming from the clutch when taking off both in first
and reverse gear. Since the problem was the noise
only - like yours the clutch bites well - they decided
to change the preasure bearing at the 15,000km
regular maintenance.
Unfortunately after replacement the noise did not
disappear. On the contrary now I have 18,000km
on clock and got worse/louder.

I did some desperate research on the net and actually
found a reference to this issue on the Aussie Rav4
forum. It looks like Toyota replaced the entire clutch
kit to that car and I am going to ask my local dealership
to do the same.

An other piece of information can be found on Toyota
Europe's technical site. It seems that a similar problem
appeared to some Yaris. The fix was replacement of
the clutch disk and cover assembly. This is why I am
going to request Toyota to replace the entire clutch kit.

It looks this is a common problem to D-4D engines
on Rav's. A friend of mine has a similar engine on
Avensis and he does not experience this sound
at 43,000km.

squeeling/whineing noise

hi everybody, this noise is fairly loud, you can hear it from in cab, even when radio is on,it only usually happens at low speeds ,generally when pulling away from parking or having to ride(control) clutch to ease and aid parking, its a mystery to me,but am concerned that its something that may fail AFTER my guarantee is up( 9 months) and could be expensive.so any help is much appreciated
