On my 08 limited I have had this whining noise as I slow down(not the spouse:).I don't think I hear it as I am cruising along. It could be doing it, but I just can't hear it as I am driving along.Has not gotten worse over time.Had it for a good while and can't really tell if it is in the front or back.My first impressions were from the rear, but I have been fooled before by sounds traveling.I have heard about the growl issue, but it is not real loud so I don't think it is that unles it could be the start of it?.Rear diff. fluid has been changed with no change.Tires had been replaced also during this, so it is not those.Any insight would be appreciated.

Did you recently purchase this car (secondhand)? There is a TSB on whining transmission in 1st and 2nd gear. It's no harm, but I had '12 mine replaced under warranty. A lot of Toyota's from those years have this problem.

To test if it's this issue, put your transmission in L or 2 gear. Drive slowly and see if the whining sound goes away when you put into 3 or 4th gear.
