instead of from right side?

left side open seems to make you more vulnerable to passing traffic
and
when door is open, it block access to stuff you might want to load from a curb

too bad it doesn't open like a wagon tail gate :(

be safe

Don't they drive on the other side in Japan?
Guess they didn't want to switch it for us Americans.
I kinda like that it swings rather than hindges on the bottom.
I do wish we had a bumper though!

A recent article (it was in one of the posts here) that Toyota designed it this way because it makes it easier to open with your right hand.

It is easier to open but it would be much nicer to have it open like it does on the Jeep Liberty (hinge on the left side). Or, open like the Highlander.

They wouldn't be able to hang the spare tire off the rear door if it went up like a hatch... But that's another argument, isn't it...? :p

I wish it was hinged from the top and used pressurized gas cylenders. Side loaders are a real pain to me as often I need it to open on the other side. In addition: have you ever tried to load your vehicle in a strong wind trying to close the door on you or on an incline?

I like it that the rear door opens on the side. We had a minivan once, and I couldn't reach the overhead rear door to close it (I'm kinda short). I remember once jumping up to grab it, and I accidentally pounded my dh on his head with the door as I was coming down. I think came down faster than he was expecting. Poor guy.
