Yakima towers and 60" bars

After removing my roof rails for a week, I missed the thought of overhead hauling abilities. I reinstalled the factory rails and my old Yakima on the RAV. Gives the ute more utility.

Looks good! Do you know which set of claws you used for the rail grabs towers? I just purchased a 2016 Rav4 but haven't received it yet. My rack is currently on a 2011 SantaFe using the small claws and I know they wont cut it.

Thank you, and sorry I don't recall the exact part numbers I ordered. I just remember ordering a set of Railgrabs along with the crossbars. Looking at the Yakima site, they redesigned the mounts, but I don't see multiple sizes, just one part number.

Did you have any issues placing the front set of rail grabs all the way forward? The OEM crossbars (and aftermarket OEM style) all recommend 3.25" back from the front upright (http://toyotaparts.sparkstoyota.com/install/PT278-42130inst.pdf).
Do you think there will be an issue with the weight being that far forward?
And does anyone out here know why the OEM x-bars are 3.25" back?

I'm wanting to put a Yakima Skybox 21 on my 2013 and need to install like you did to get the tailgate to lift (57" from tailgate when open to front rail).

The Yakima Rail Grabs are Timberline Towers (https://www.yakima.com/timberline)

I adjust accordingly to the object I'm mounting, but I'd rather the load be distributed closer to the bases, vice further inward.

It looks like the distance back on the forward bar may just be to clear the sunroof.

Thanks. I assume mounting that close is something you've done on this or other vehicles before. I'm new to roof mounting (used to have a Taco, it got rust recalled, now have a family to haul too) so I'm still figuring it out.

I do have the factory sunroof on my 2013 XLE and I don't see a conflict with mounting the OEM bars further forward, and I think the Yak Timberline towers would clear the sunroof by many inches anyway.

Great help. Thanks. I'll re-measure and maybe go for that Yak Skybox21 for my camp gear.

I think with the Yakima railgrabs and round bars you can mount as far forward as you like. I have mine mounted right at the seem of the rails with no issue.

I think the reason they may recommend mounting the OEM bars back 3.5" is because they are flat bars so keeping them level on the rails is more of a concern. This is just a hypothesis.

mojoe, you said you removed your roof rails for a week? Did you have the trim pieces to cover the gaps in the rain channel where the rails bolt to the roof? I'd like to remove mine, and am trying to figure out what pieces are needed.

Thanks!

Sure thing. Use this thread to get your parts:

An eBay seller has assembled a kit for deleting the rails as well. You get all the parts in one kit.
