My RAV is supposed to get 31 MPG on the highway. I’ve taken two trips. One of 1,900 miles and one of 2,800 miles. On both trips I got less than 27 MPG.
I took the same trips last year with a 2011 Camry (rated 32 highway MPG) equipped with the same I4 engine as the RAV and got 30 and 31 MPG respectively.
Please be clear that I am not comparing the RAV’s MPG to the Camry’s. I am comparing each of them to their respective highway MPG rating. I simply believe that since the Camry met highway MPG expectations that the RAV should also.
I would like to hear your highway MPG experience with your 2013 RAV4.
 
In the city I average about 18 in the winter. In the summer I am at about 20. I have taken two highway trips since January and the first trip I averaged 30 with a lot of steep grades about 700 miles through Utah and on a fairly flat 300 mile trip I averaged 33.
 
My 2013 XLE AWD is rated @ 29MPG Hwy.....

I can pretty consistently get 30MPG (calculated) back and forth to work (95% Hwy) during the summer months.
100% Sport Mode

I can't complain at all.

Our 2013 RAV4 FWD WITH ~6K miles has a lifetime displayed mileage of 29.4 MPG. We use it mostly around town with occasional 60 mile round trips to the cities. Running along at 65 on the interstate it shows well into the 30's except going up hills. Our 2012 Camry I4 shows 34.5 MPG for the last 5K or so. It is used mostly on the interstate at 70-75 MPH. I do not use ethanol laced gas when ever possible.
 
I drive my 2013 XLE AWD in the city every weekday and there is traffic light on each single street block. the average MPG is about 15 MPG (I refill 8 gallons into my car every time and it will run around 120 miles in 10 days.
 
I agree that with so many variables there is no one 'mpg' or in our case 'L/100km' that anyone can expect. We all know that the stats car makers give us about gas useage are best case scenario. All I can say is that I'm satisfied with the gas mileage of my 2013vRav4 XLE but couldn't tell you exactly what that is. Btw I drive almost exclusively in Sport Mode.
 
My 2013 XLE just rounded 10k miles. According to phone app I use to track fuel economy and other expenses on my car, I've averaged 28.6 mpg since new with a high tank of 31.3 and a low tank of 25.0. I just had the first oil change done and then took a 600 mile round trip this past week end. The car averaged 30.4 on the way out and 29.7 on the way back.


EPA highway numbers are usually going to be the absolute best (ideal conditions) you'll get, not necessarily an "average." My question would be, what kind of cruising speeds were you running and what kind of terrain were you dealing with? Also, were you pushing any significant headwinds? My Rav4 will show what I think are significant swings in calculated fuel economy depending on whether or not I'm pushing the wind or running with it.

I have noticed a big dip in mileage between 65 and 70MPH. I've also noticed a big dip with a head wind.

In the summer I typically get in the low 30's with mostly highway driving. In the winter it's in the upper 20's.

One more thing, make sure your tires are not under inflated or the parking brake is on.

I've gotten over 32 mpg on my last 2 hwy trips, mostly flat road with 2 passengers and big dog , 60-70mph. I average 25 mpg in the city.
I admit I drive while watching the instant mpg gauge to always stay in the sweet spot.

Doesn't your Fuelly 12.1L/100km convert to 19.4 mpg? If you get 25 city where's all the gas going? :confused:
 
I figure the 10% ethanol in the gas knocks mileage down about 10%, so figure about 25mpg with real gasoline.
I don't see how 10% ethanol could reduce it the full 10%. That would be like saying ethanol has no energy in it whatsoever. I think ethanol is about 2/3 the energy of gasoline, so you would get closer to a 3-4% dip in mileage.

Yeah, I don't think that quite shakes out to 10% reduction. Our fuel in Ohio has ethanol in it... I'm not sure if it's up to 10% but I know there's ethanol and I still got 31.x MPG highway in our AWD RAV (rated at 29 highway). I think there are a lot of variables as mentioned... but I don't think ethanol is one that should be highly considered.

Yeah, it doesn't compute on paper but when Oregon mandated 10% ethanol in gasoline the highway mileage with my then-Hyundai Elantra declined from 38 to 33 and sometimes even less over the same roads and conditions.

That is the fuelly results for my recently stolen 2012 V6 RAV4. Never got around to removing it yet.
 
You bought it's younger twin brother! 25.4 mpg looks better. Is L/100km the normal way to describe fuel usage there?
L/100km is the metric version for fuel ratings. I'm old enough to remember Canada's previous mpg system but even then , that was the UK version since the UK gallon and US gallon have different volumes.
Once the US, Liberia and Burma officially start using the metric system, then the whole planet will be on the same page (measurement wise).:laugh:laugh
