Thought Id share today I was checking out a friend's 2023 crown .. nice car . But I noticed it's calling for 0w8 engine oil ... The ever increasing government/EPA cafe laws for fuel economy. . Looks to be the same a25a engine used in the RAV4s .

0w8 is for the lower horsepower Hybrid Crown

Hybrid MAX uses 0w20 (... has turbocharger)

HYBRID: 16-valves (four-valve/cylinder), Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC) with Variable Valve Timing-intelligent system by Electric motor (VVT-iE) and VVT-i.
HYBRID MAX: 16-valves (four-valve/cylinder), Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC) with Dual VVT-i

HYBRID: 184 hp @ 6000 rpm
HYBRID MAX: 264hp @ 6000 rpm

Nice find. So what's Toyota going to say when 0W-8 and 0W-16 isn't available? Will it be 0W-20 as when 0W-16 was not available. I also wonder if they're going to say it's ok to use 0W-8 in 0W-16 engines, similar to when Honda went from 5W-20 to 0W-20.

Just for reference, 5W-20 to 0W-20 is not a "viscosity change", it's an increase in cold start protection.

But here we go again.... 😄

Toyota will release it into US with "0w8" sticker under the hood, but in manual it will say "if not availbale, just use 0w16, or whatever heavier oil you want for the conditions you drive in".

“Trust the engineers”

the engineers at CAFE?
Food for thought - CARB leader is on record saying "she wants to ban all ICE" anyways, so yeah. They just enacted no new sales after some year, what, late last year?

I got a cousin that is an owner/operator of his own pre-DEF 625hp semi. He can't go into CA now. His reaction - Haha, great!

If anybody has access and actually wants to see the science behind 0w-8: Development of Ultra Low Viscosity 0W-8 Engine Oil

When I looked up how 0w-16 was made (and still had article access) I was surprised to find it was engineered to have the same film thickness as 0w-20. It’s isnt “thinner”, it has a lower viscosity. The terms aren’t exactly synonymous at 0w-20 and below. Manufacturers are relying on additives to maintain the film thickness and shear strength with lower viscosity. I’m guessing 0w-8 was engineered in a similar manner. Whether or not it’s worth the 0.8% gain in fuel economy is a different story, but reading how the oil functions is interesting nonetheless.

Just because one can look up the science behind 0w8 oil doesn't necessarily mean one fully understands the science behind it . If anyone who is a certified engine oil chemist please chime in .... Until then all posts made should be taken as an roughly uneducated opinion.

I'm 100% sure the science behind any motor oil is far beyond most of our comprehension.

I’m a quality engineer by profession. All I can really do is gain an understanding of the subject matter and judge if something meets requirements (I.e. did you use the viscosity on the oil cap, lol)

The 0.8% gain in fuel economy isn’t for us to benefit from. Driving habits alone are going to save a driver more money than any type of oil ever will. It’s worth it to Toyota from a fleet perspective. That’s how CAFE works.

With the push to EVs of any kind, the heavy R&D in motor oils is not really a thing any longer.
2nd, the ULVs (a group of oils) main purpose was to reduced drag, thereby increasing mpgs. Such oils still need to lubricate.

But as stated, if a ULV is really no different than say a 0w20 at operating temp (which would be rare), then running a 0w20 does no harm to the engine, then it is likely (99.9% probable) the 0w20 protects better than a ULV. As long as the manuals keep saying "or use any oil suitable for your driving habits and environment", then what does it matter? The only thing that matters is service specification.

Are there any Toyota ICEs that come with a service spec higher than SN ?

I have yet to see anyone here address this subjective language in the OM. For so my people here clutching their OMs like its a bible, you'd think they wouldn't cherry-pick it so much!

I and a few others did in the previous oil thread that got locked. Most of us moved on. If you missed that discussion, I think it was titled the "Dealer messed up" thread, or something close to that.
