Here's a (stolen) pic to show what I'm talking about:

It got wet (someone left the drain on the cooler open on the trip to camping) and I want to remove it to properly dry it. Any hints? It seems obvious I need to remove the middle tray, but how much more do I have to remove to get it out?

I did some googling but came up dry.

An option for drying the areas you can't remove is to get some dessicant (Damp Rid comes to mind) at the hardware store/big box hardware, place them in the areas that are the most damp.

i recently gutted the car so i can tell you how to get it out. you have to first take out the hidden tray in the center. there are 4 screws on the top, two on each side. then its held down by 5 clips. if you put the rear seats forward you have more room to work. pull up on the front edge of the tray that was obscured by the rear seat, there's 3 clips down there. then pull up on the rear edge of the tray, there's two clips there.

next remove the small rear panel that lines the lower hidden compartment. just pull up, its held down by 3 or 4 clips.

after that you have to remove both rear side panels. you need a 10mm socket, 14mm socket, and philips screwdriver. use this post to help you: http://www.rav4world.com/forums/98-4-3-interior/87230-rear-fender-cover-panel-how-hard-remove.html#post890727

when removing the panel remember to disconnect the electrical socket on the left rear.

after those panels are out you will clearly see the liner is held down by 8 plastic plugs. just pull them straight out and the liner will come out.

how about a wet vac and a few towels. then maunally turn off the dome and cargo lights, and open the swing door toward the sun. shouldn't take too long with this kind of heat we've been experiencing.

dquant, did you have a really tough time prying up the 2 clips on the rear edge of the hidden storage tray? Mine won't budge and I feel like I'm going to break the tray.

Since dquant hasn't posted since Dec 1, 2012 he may not see yours so I'll give my advice. I didn't read the whole thread but I've had both the rear large storage well and the smaller front one out.
To remove the clips I use a fork shaped pry bar that puts the force right next to the clip. That way if anything breaks it'll most likely be the clip itself. My bar is actually a retired dandelion digger that I modified by cutting a 3/8" slot down the middle. Works great and it'll still attack dandelions!
You could use two thin screwdrivers held against the sides of the clip.

How do you get the tool to the clips? There's a deep front lip on the trunk door side and I don't think I can get in there from the sides. I wonder if I can see/access the front clips from the rear seat side. I'll take a look tonight.

Thanks for the info. I'm surprised this is so difficult. Everybody seemed to indicate this is an easy job. Or maybe I'm just a wimp and need to pull harder.

Maybe it was just a hard pull that did it. I definitely recommend wearing gloves to avoid cuts. That in itself says, "pull hard."
