all is means is that it's been 5000 miles since the last time the light came on and was reset, it's a reminder. there's no sensor involved.

what will toyota do? depends on the dealer - somewhere between an oil change and rob you blind...
Do you DIY experienced guys actually change oil at 5000 miles? I thought many changes at 7500 miles without any problem. what do you all think? thanks,

We do when it's still under warranty! Actually I do mine every 6 months because I don't drive 5000 miles in that time. Lots of short trips is harder on the engine and the oil.

Now that my sister's trucklet is out of warranty, I'm going to try the new Toyota 0W-20 synthetic for 10,000 miles/1 year but will do a UOA at 7,500 to determine if this is sustainable based on her driving conditions. If not, then it's back to Pennzoil Yellow Bottle 5W-20 and 5,000 miles.

Your sister is very lucky to have a brother like you!

Here are some steps for resetting the maintenance light I found:

Phase 1. Identify the vehicle's battery pack. Detach the 12v positive wire (reddish cable) from terminal (+). Let it stay disconnected for five minutes. While the battery is detached, cycle the ignition switch to ON three times.

You've just erased crucial emissions affiliated information that is invaluable to a smog specialist trying to fix your car. Additionally you erased vital "readiness flag" computer data which requires days to weeks, to compile.

Phase 2. Make sure ignition switch is OFF. Reconnect the battery pack 12v positive cable to battery terminal (+).

You're definitely risking electronic element damage. High voltage flash generated while the reconnection of the positive 12v wire may cause trouble for sensitive digital emissions components.

Phase 3. Cycle ignition switch to ON point and just wait 60 seconds, after which start the car. Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon Light has to be reset and switched OFF.

I hope someone will find this post handy. The data is from: Reset Service Engine Light, Check Engine Codes, Trouble Codes, OBD2 Codes, Diagnostic Codes - EngineServiceLight.com

cheers, Daniel :)

Sometimes when we change the oil on a vehicle with a maintenance reminder, the light is not on. The customer noticed by the sticker on the windshield that it was time. We do the oil change, and 2-3 weeks later the light pops on and they call and say why did the light come on? You just changed the oil? We don't look good, and have to explain that the light was not on, so we did not think to turn it out. I do try to reset them all during an oil change even if the light is not on, but some Volvo, Mercedes and BMW and Explorers require the trunk to be open, 6psi of air in the left rear tire, and the inside mirror pointed horizontally so these can be a bit tricky to reset.

Usually if it is a stinker to reset, we print out the instructions and put them in the owner's manual.

Here are some steps for resetting the maintenance light:
I've heard pushing it off a cliff will also make most of the lights go off   but in some stubborn cases the procedure may need to be repeated. However, some maintenance may still be required.

You have to push it off the cliff backwards to turn the light off. :).......on a Tuesday.
Thanks Tex! I couldn't remember the exact sequence for getting the light off the first time. Sure saves on the broken glass, crane expenses, etc.

But isn't the bottom of the cliff getting littered with all those RAVs?
Yeah, especially since Tex informed us of this procedure nearly four years ago.
But unfortunately there aren't any qualifying cliffs within reasonable distance from my town so I've been cheating - just pushing the button on the dash.
