Just wondering if anyone knows a good place to buy a block heater for my 06 4cyl. Would the install require a drain and fill of the coolant?

While i'm here, i have some blackness (dried oil) directly under the engine cover. I'm guessing there might be a small leak on the valve cover? Is this common?

There are a few existing posts on the RAV4 block heaters.

These heaters are cylindrical heating elements that slide into a hole pre-drilled in the block. So they're not like tank heaters...no messing around with coolant, or any fluids.

What's not mentioned in those posts, however, is that apparently Toyota recently stopped selling block heaters, at least for the RAV4 engines. That same model block heater is used in about half the Toyota engines, too. I tried ordering one online and they told me you can't get them any more from Toyota. (Weird!) A parts person at my dealer told me the same thing a few months back.

However, when I called to get my ToyotaCare maintenance scheduled about 6 weeks ago, on a whim I asked the parts person about it and they said they DO install block heaters, but they're aftermarket. Fine by me! So I got it done. I've already used it a couple of times. It may be that only certain dealers will do it, given the aftermarket nature of the parts.

Below are two of the more relevant previous posts. More detail about the overall system and procedure are in the first one (albeit for the V6 engine), with the I4 engine-specific additional info in the second one.

Best of luck.

I read a few threads but most were V6 applications. I'm sure the 2.5L install would be the same as my 2.4L. Thank you!

I've found two sites in the US that sell the heater but none in canada. I was hoping to save on shipping costs.

How long have you been letting it heat your block before starting it in the morning?

call a dealership, bought mine there and ended up being cheaper than ordering it online and paying shipping... it's on the install that they will make it up... but most toyotas are just a question of routing the wire and pushing the capsule into the hole in the block, no messing around with plugs and coolant...

I've been leaving it plugged in for a couple of hours, to be on the safe side. I don't actually know how long is best based on any given situation, however. I've only been plugging it in when outside air temperature is close to 0F or colder. My garage is usually about 8-10F warmer than the outside air temp, and where I am we've only had I think 2 days that warranted plugging in.

I figure mostly anything to help reduce friction during cold cranking (hopefully extending engine life a bit), but also that can help speed up the availability of warm air to help keep windows clear and such, is a good thing.

Have you considered magnetic block heater and electrical battery blanket? No engine block intrusion to worry about. Plug them into an outdoors timer to control the when, and the length of operating time.

Pretty sure you can get them at Canadian Tire. Although I wondered if the magnetic block heater would even works on an aluminum engine block . . . .

This may be a little late but. I got mine from ebay for $49 shipped. That seller is out. But here is a similar one.
Check out this item I found on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/motors/link/?nav=item.view&id=331098908727

Need to clarify, I bought one for my 03 matrix xrs, which is the same for our rav4. Im still looking for an install guide to the rav4. Which is y I have not purchase one for it yet. It did help on the matrix. Block temp is now at 80F on first start up. Had it hook up to a timer to run 3-4hrs prior to leaving in the morning.
