Have an '08 SE model with only a radio...Want to install a GPS/radio/Bluetooth system. So, did some searching and the Custron T1070RAV Toyota RAV4 had some high ratings.....but I cannot find where to buy the thing!...Crazy!....Where can I get instructions for removing the radio?....Can I assume all the extra plugs needed for the new unit are in the car, they're just not used?...Also, didn't see any info on updates of the GPS maps....
Is there a better unit that I should look at?
Also, want to add a backup camera....Can that be done?......which one is best to get?
If anyone has any help, I'd certainly appreciate it, since this is my first time attempting this.....

Thanks
Lloyd

Search the forum and you will find a few common options:

1. JVC unit navigation receiver, with Scosche dash kit and Metra wiring kit for steering wheel buttons if you have any. Very reliable.
2. Chinese units which sell for about $350 on Ebay (Custron, Metra, Henhao, Myron & Davis,...) No need for dash kit or wiring kits. They all-in-one units. They do NOT perform perfectly and have limitations e.g. GPS will not work when making a Bluetooth call, ...

FYI, I have a Henhao unit.

They all support backup cameras.

This documents should give you an idea of how to replace the radio; very easy.

Thanks for the information.....That's EXACTLY what I'm looking to do.
Let me ask, how did you run the wire for the GPS antenna?....And how about the backup camera?....Did you run the wires under the car then up through the firewall?
I read the descriptions of several GPS units and nothing about updating the maps.....What did you do?

Thanks again, I appreciate your time

The first place that comes to mind for me is Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com). I've done a little business with them through the years and they were pretty thorough but I've never done anything as comprehensive as you're suggesting.

Good luck,
Steve R.
Thanks Steve...I went to Crutchfields and found what I need!

My GPS antenna is behind my rear-view mirror.
Some members say that the GPS antenna works well when positioned on top of the radio unit, under the dash

In my case, I ran the wire behind the radio, behind the glove box, tucked behind the A-pillar and behind the overhead liner.

What's a double din? How do I determine if I have one?

If you are going for a double DIN radio, then definitely get the Scosche dash kit. The other kits (e.g. Metra) do not fit as nicely as the Scosche.
Thanks for the info....Ok, so this is going to sound really dumb, but I just have a "regular" AM/FM stock radio in my Rav4....How do I determine if it's a double din?...I was on Crutchfield's site and they have a Blaupunkt New York 830 unit for $ 500 and it says "fits double din."...I also did a search for the Scosche kit but they don't have one for the '08 Rav4. So let me look around for that Scosche kit.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Thanks!...Nice idea...I also saw a youtube where it was attached to the back of the GPS unit in the dash...I like your idea...I'll try that.
Is removing the trim panels a problem or did you just use those little plastic pry bars?

Thanks

Single din is a radio about 2 inches high, double dins are anything above it - usually 4 inches and up.
Ok, thanks....I'll have to look around for that brand you recommended. So, is it fair to say that the dash will accept either a single or double din, I just need to get the correct installation kit?

Thanks

On the chinese unit, the Navigation is on an SD card. You can just replace the maps by copying a newer one or buy another SD card with the new maps.

I have IGO Primo 2. New map on microSD card should cost about $30.

Each unit is different but most Chinese units use the microSD card.
