Hello rav4world. This is my first post here. I recently purchased a used rav4. I like it for the most part but I would love to make it into a project car/sleeper. I am currently replacing some parts that were needed from the pervious owner. Rack and pinion assembly, tie rods, hub and bearing assembly, brakes. I’m looking for some information on what would be the best way to mod the current stock engine for more power or the best choice for an engine swap. Any helpful information is much appreciated!

This is the wrong car to make it go faster and there are not many performance parts for this vehicle. At least you have the 2.4 litre engine which is much faster than the 2.0 litre engine.

You should have bought the Gen3 model with V6 which is very fast and sexier.

How do I make my 4 cylinder zillion mile Toyota engine faster?

It's been a least a week since we've had one of these questions. Short answer is you don't.
Short of a rebuilt engine with a custom Turbo, supercharger, or nitrous it just won't work. The amount of money to make it a sleeper would far exceed the total value of the vehicle many times. Get it in good mechanical order, drive it, save money for a Vette.

If by "sleeper" you mean putting a bed in it, that's probably doable. :wink

Can I rephrase that and say the 2.4L is much less slower than the 2.0L?

Yep, and sometimes we go two whole weeks! :surprise

Heed the others warnings, but if your determined, skilled, or rich enough, there are definitely things that CAN be done.

Motor swaps: 3s-gte seems by far the favourite, although they always seem to be in the 4.1... anyway the newest generation claims 260hp.

There's not a whole lot of options for forced induction (with the 2az). There was a TRD supercharger made for the first generation Scion Tc (I believe you can find a rav with this on this forum?).

Since the 2az is in some fairly common cars, there are examples of turbocharged models. Camrys, the aforementioned scion. There are some crazy claims... which id much rather see in an AWD than a FWD ? . Idk if it's any good but: http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/engine/130-0707-engine-tuning/

600hp 2AZ-FE

Read this, it seems incredible for the 2AZ-FE engine (second and third generation RAV4).

popularmechanics.com/cars/car-technology/g18751735/test-drive-toyota-ch-r/

A 2AZ-FE engine making 600 horsepower at 23 pounds of boost. 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds in a Toyota C-HR.

"The engine block, crankshaft, and camshaft were left stock, but DG-Spec replaced many of internals with tougher stuff. There are new 9:1 CP pistons, Dezod Motorsports forged connecting rods and special stainless steel and Inconel alloy valves to stand up to the extra stress the turbocharger puts on the engine."

However the most amazing part of this article is the following statement concerning a stock 2AZ-FE engine used for experiments.

"They even have a spare 2.4-liter engine “mule” with completely stock internals and no upgraded parts. DG-Spec has found this mule engine to survive so far with the same 23 pounds of boost as the upgraded engine."

Weight reduction. Take out the rear seats. Remove the rear tire. Keep it light as possible.

Otherwise, look into suspension mods for handling. I have some in the classified.

Some guy in Oz put an LS1 in his. Quite a bit of work.

05 RAV4 L, 4A, 4WD

MagnaFlow 49020
Vibrant 10633
NST pulleys
Rial wheels
No spare tire or associated tools

This is 100 lbs of weight reduction and an unknown amount of power. My RAV may have 99 names but “Sleeper” ain’t one of them. Maybe interesting to note that everything I’ve done here only reduced the RAV’s 0-60 time to that of a 5M model, or high 7’s.

Now if you started with 5-speed manual, you might end up with a RAV that’s legitimately sporty (shrug).
