The official fuel tank capacity specified by Toyota for the 2019 RAV4 is 14.5 gallons, for both regular and hybrid models. Per automotive standards, the specified tank size is the amount of usable fuel, and already accounts for tank geometry and configuration for any non-usable fuel, air pockets, etc. So it's 14.5 gallons of usable gas.

The 5th gen HV isn't much different than the 4th gen HV as far as tank capacity and reserve, it had a 14.8 gallon tank with 2.7 gallon spec for reserve, fuel economy wasn't as good as the 5th gen, but it didn't have a problem refueling as many 5th gen HV do.

I've driven long after the low fuel warning came on, when the miles to empty reaches 0 it changes to refuel, I drove another 25-30 miles, still only took 12.1 gallons to refill the 14.8 gallon tank of the hybrid, so there's about 2-3 gallons reserve, others have reported the same.

That's why I am thinking 2019 gas tank is smaller than 2018 gas tank as the hwy mpg is so much better. It doesn't make sense to keep it the same size as 18 rav4. I think there is a typo coupled with the fact that there are some rav4 out there with a bias of 2 gallons. Sensor bias or some other bias. Bad batch of sensors ? I estimate my tank to be 12 someting gallons total. Guage past full on first click. If I had a sensor with bias then pump would shut off as before when full. Then I would see the Guage shows not full. So I would keep pumping and overpumping by 2 gallons. Not good for evap system but Guage would now shown full.

I put 13.777 gallons in my tank the last time I filled up, so your 12 gallon assumption is wrong...

Then how do you explain Illflyaway being able to put 12.97 gallons in his? And Tip Tank
13.777 gallons in his?

That's what I typically do too. I email myself these stats and file them away in a folder.

Each email listing the following...
  1. DTE
  2. MPG (Tank)
  3. ODO
  4. Picture of Tank MPG before refueling
  5. Picture of gas receipt
  6. Picture of Tank MPG after refueling.
Last fill up indicates that I went 637 miles at 48.6 mpg before I stopped for fuel with the DTE reading 41 miles. At that rate, I needed to pump in 13.1 gallons to true that. But pumped in 12.97 gallons before it clicked off. Did not try to top it up.

Now, I worry if I'll run out of gas before the DTE reads 0. Probably won't risk that though and will fill up once it goes below 1/2 tank. Just tried to see if I could get into the 600 mile club and I did it. But I ended up with more questions than satisfaction.

13.7 < 14.5

Did you put 13.7 with the pump shutting of on first click.
If it took you several attempts then you overfilled. I used to do that in my younger days with a good gas price at the pump. I learned my lesson.
Thanks for the math lesson that 13.7 is less than 14.5. I didn't drive until I ran out of gas...there was obviously gas left in the tank. But on the flip side using your logic, 13.7 > 12 something.

I didn't overfill anything; I topped off. If I was overfilling, I would have had gas coming out of the filler neck and down the side of my fender. I was bypassing the flaw in the tank/filler design to ensure I get the range I was promised...

I understand your frustation. 12 something, 13.7, 12.97 are just numbers. I am trying to figure out my gas tank too.
Also the gas does not have to spill out over the fenders for the tank to be overfull. I used to keep pumping click after click and overfill by 2 or 3 gallons without any spills.

Since yours refills easily past full on the gauge, just what are you trying to figure out?

My Canadian xle bought 2 weeks ago easily fills up to past the full on the Guage at the first click on the pump handle.
