Depends on the type on driving you do. I had a commute with 16 stop lights over 8 miles (i.e. city driving and that's 1 way). I wore my brakes out in 60,000 miles.

Brake pads do not get replaced based on km. There is a brake wear indicator that makes a noise when it gets too low. The metal indicator rubs on the rotor which means it is time to replace the pads. Some replace the pads well before the wear indicator noise since they want better braking performance. Also how long they last depend on the brake material and your driving habits. According to my research the average life is 50,000 to 115,000 km.
