Is there an advantage to using USB-C or is it more the situation of "I have mostly USB-C devices". No additional power or anything like that?

I guess it won't matter if a 2022 XSE can't use the module anyway.
I don't have the car yet and don't even know how many and/or where the USB outlets are located. I have exactly 2 USB-C cables, so not a big deal for me unless the "C" can provide a higher voltage/quicker charge.

USB-C cables just like any other cable only provides the amount of power the source supplies. There are adaptors that adapt USB-A to USB-C So you can use USB-C cables with a USB-A outlet.
That is what I figured -unless the vehicle is prewired with higher power to the one outlet already.

All my devices are micro usb or whatever that common connection is on a cell phone. I have a USB-C GoPro and that's it.

Thanks for the clarification.

USB-c can charge at a higher rate (depending on source) and also has a higher data transfer rate than USB-a.

I assume there are also USB-C to USB-A adaptors for rear seat passengers who want to charge IPhones and other devices since my new RAV4 only has the C version outlets.
The iPhone doesn't use a USB-C plug It uses a Lighting port cable. Rumor has it the next model iPhone 14 will use the USB-C plug. The later model iPads use a USB-C connector to charge them. The Lighting Port cable is usually a USB-A on one end and a Lighting port on the other. You can get them with a USB-C instead of the USB-A in an aftermarket cable.

You might be able to swap out your USB-c ports for one of the ports mentioned earlier in this thread that have both USB-A and USB-c.

My iPhone came with a charging cable with lightning plug on the end that plugs into the phone, and USB-c on the supply end. Since my '21 RAV4 came with only USB-a outlets, this thread gave me the info I needed to have a USB-c available for my iPhone.

My iPad also has the lightning input, but came with a USB-a on the other end.

Whats he power on these things? Newer phones w/ the bigger battery fast or super fast charging mode anywhere from 20W, 30W, or 45W. Any less phone wont go into fast charging mode. If replacing it just for usb c why not just get cable usb A to usb C other end.

Or go with these smaller flush 30W charger that fits flush in cigarette adapter. It say 60W but supports simultaneous charging of 2 devices, but does NOT support simultaneous super-fast charging.

I have one of these for my 12v charge port. I swapped my rear USB ports for the dual port design so I have one of each in the car. I'm not so worried about charging my phone ASAP while in the car, I mainly swapped it because on long road trips I will sometimes forget and extra usb-a charger (it's an ancient design, haven't used one in the house in quite a while) so it gives me something to plug my usb-c charger into, which is what I use for the wall chargers. It just adds flexibility to my charging options in the car. Since I use my 12v charger for a power bank and the other one for a car fridge.

I'm surprised so many people are hating on modding your own vehicle to your tastes. This adds redundancy when you forget to pack a 12v usb-c charger, or when you don't have a 12v to plug it into because they're occupied, or when you forget your extra usb-a charger because I stopped using those chargers 4 years ago. This is a flush mod that doesn't leave any dongle hanging out and adds a usb-c port to the car, for those of us who like form and function.

Yes, I was able to replace the rear outlets, but those are the ones I care about the least. Really wanted to change the USB outlets in the center console. I'm tempted to swap the front and rear plugs so I can put a USB-C outlet in the center console.
Another solution is to just swap the rear connector with the front connector. Move the USB ports from the center console to the back seats, and put the one from the back seats into the center console
Edit: this would work for kdube because he said the rears are the ones he cares about the least
Found the connector housing part numbers today.
The connector housing number for the USB outlet on the rear of the console is 90980-12D25.
The connector housing number for the USB outlet inside the center console is 90980-12B59.
The part number for the repair wires the fit either connector housing is 82998-24290.
(The part number for the matching repair wire pin that will fit into the above repair wire is 82998-24270)

With this info, one should be able to replace the connector housing inside the center console by removing the existing pins and putting on the different connector housing. No need to "swap" connectors.

Or one could build a conversion pig tail from these parts. However, there is no matching male connector housing for either of the existing connectors (the part that is built into the USB port).

I should add that the connector numbers are the same between the '21 RAV4 and the '22 RAV4.

The '22 RAV4 has all USB-c outlets in and on the back of the center console, no USB-a; they appear to be back lighted. So if you don't need or want USB-a outlets, you could just get the '22 USB outlets, but they are a bit pricey.

Now that the car is in my possession I fully understand how silly it is to have all USB-C ports. Ouch.

I guess my first vehicle accessory is either a cable or an adaptor.

I intended on a road trip this weekend -I tend to stick my GoPro to the windshield and record a time warp. There is no way to charge the GoPro at the moment without a new USB-C cord or adaptor.
I can use the USB-A to charge the camera when the camera is off, only. The camera goes into file transfer mode as USB-A is a dataport. I'd have to unplug it any time I wanted to start a recording. Not the end of the world but adds a step and complication of sticking my hand in the dark hole without being able to look at what I'm doing.

Question:
Is it possible to purchase a USB-A to USB-C charge-only cord so the GoPro doesn't default to file transfer mode when the camera is turned on?

Anyway, I either use a powerbank to charge the camera or I find a long enough USB-C cord or get an adaptor won't will allow enough charging power to pass through.

The USB-A seems to work with the actual battery charger and with the power bank, so those items could charge during a drive.

I just hate to have to buy 3 or 4 replacement cords and/or combination of adaptors to record devices while on the road.

I generally keep a USB drive connected with music (not always listening to it but is always plugged in). That's a downside to having music available.

I need to experiment with camera positions too -anybody here use a GoPro Suction mount for filming their drive? I may check out the view with it stuck to the pano roof. Never did that in the previous vehicle, just the windshield. I've seen a RAV4 review video where the 'reviewer' seems to have it mounted to the glass roof.

Since the connectors are the same for the console mounted USB outlets, just replace them with the earlier version with either two USB-a or one USB-a and one USB-c. Used ones go for as little as $10 on Ebay.

There are many variations possible. Just keep in mind that the outlet inside the center console has a different connector than the outlet on the back of the center console.

There seem to be dozens of different outlets that may fit. Here are some part numbers for what I know will fit:

85532-42020/0R020 Inside center console with two USB-a outlets, no covers over the outlets
85532-06050/06060/06070 back of center console with two USB-a outlets, with covers over the outlets
85532-08040 back of center console with one USB-a and one USB-c, with covers over the outlets
85532-08050 back of center console with one USB-a and one USB-c, no covers, but backlit so you can see in the dark

The 2022 USB outlets for the center console, both with two USB-c outlets are (they may be backlit, but not sure):
85532-0R070 back of center console
85532-0R060 inside center console

You may be able to trade your two USB-c outlets for an earlier version with one or two USB-a on them.

Just installed the 85532-08050 at the back of the center console. It, too, is plug and play. Even though it does not have the doors over the outlets, it has the added advantage of being back lit so you can easily see it in the dark.

Has anyone found a USB-c to fit the different connector inside the center console? I could not find a part number on the connector so I could build an adapter cable.
Hi, I am following this thread with interest from Australia. We own a 2021 RAV4 Cruiser hybrid whichnI believe is your XLE trim level, with the dreaded Usba outlets and a wireless charging tray. I would lovevto replace the centre console inside plugs with Usbc, and note the part number has been identified inmitgerbposts. Have you been able to resolve the plug change option yet?

Yes, it can be done, but you have to do some connector magic. I don't have time now to look up the details, but may in a day or two. (Sorry, I just got home this PM from surgery).

Thanks for responding. There is no hurry, as we are in the US with our son's family until February, before heading home to Australia.
I was going to create a new thread on how to install a USB-C inside the center console but it got too complicated and I was afraid of liability issues in case someone was not able to follow my instructions.

Since you live in Australia , there might be some wiring differences from the USA models.

But to help you out, here are a few observations, applicable to USA vehicles only.

1. The USB outlets on the back of the center console and inside need different connectors, the key way is different:

Image

2. According to the wiring diagram, the pin assignments between the back and inside are reversed; on the back connector the positive is on pin 1, and for the connector inside the console, the positive is on pin 2 ('21 and earlier models. On '22 models, they are the same).

3. The connector housing for the outlet on the back of the console is part number 90980-12D25, while the part number for the connector housing for the outlet inside the console is 90980-12B59.

4. The part number for the female repair wires (to fit in the connector housings above) is 82998-24290. The male equivalent is 82998-24270.

5. What connector housing you may need depends on which USB-C outlet you select. There an a number of possible ones in the posts earlier in this thread.

There are several possible approaches to change the USB-A inside the console to a USB-C:

1. Change the connector housing and swap the wire assignments. This requires special tool 09992-01030 which is very hard to find and very expensive.

2. Make a jumper cable to go between the old connector inside the center console and the new USB-C outlet using the parts above. This the the route I took. I bought a USB-A/C outlet, part number 85532-08050. It is lighted so it works well inside the darkness of the center console:

Since there is no connector housing that will fit the existing connectors, you have to just insert the male ends of the repair wires into the old connector, and secure it so it doesn't come apart. Of course, you also have to be sensitive to the polarity reversals as well. So complicated. This is what my final interface looks like between the old connector and the jumper cable I made:

Note the male repair wires (top) are just inserted into the old connector with suitable heat shrink to keep them from touching.

I hope this helps you some.

Thanks for such a comprehensive response, which will be valuable to many of us. I intend on our return to Australia to follow your approach. In the meantime, I will accumulate the various parts to enable that whilst we are still in the US (on an extended visit with our new grandson). May I enquire where you sourced your parts here in the US?

Congrats on the new grandson!

The connector housings I got from my local Toyota dealer. They are only $5 to $6 each so it is not worth shopping around for a better price. You can order them from parts.toyota.com and specify pick up in person from your local dealer so shipping is free.

All repair wires can be obtained from a Toyota dealer but they are very expensive. The female repair wires are usually available on Ebay for less than the dealer charges: (2 pieces) 8299824290 Genuine Toyota TERMINAL REPAIR W/W 82998-24290 | eBay

I have not seen the male repair wires on Ebay, so I got mine from www.hi-1000ec.com. They come from China so shipping is expensive ($20 express) but if you buy several from them, it is less cost than the dealer.
