Hello everyone,

Two months ago I took my car to Toyota dealership and they swap the tires and balance the car. I have wheel locks that came with my car. I'm having issue with my tire sensor and need to get the tire remove. I can't seem to locate the key to remove wheel lock. Is there a way to get another key ? I checked the glove compartment and where the spare tire is located to see if its there, but I didn't find it. Where else could the mechanic put it.

I would head back to the dealership, just wondering if the machanic left the wheel lock key on his work bench after doing your tires? If they don't replacement key that fits your wheel lock you may be forced to use a lug nut adapter which fits over wheel lock to remove them. The dealership should do that for you for free as they did not give you back the key in the first place.

The vehicle came with the wheel locks so there was no package. So when i took my car for wheel alignment and rotation the service department rep asked me where was my wheel lock. I kept it in the spare tire compartment. As stated i need to replace one tire since I keep getting tire pressure warning light 1 - 2 days after putting air. I filed complaints with the dearlership and got in contact with Toyota US. A manager for dearlership called me. Telling me that mechanic have a master key to remove the wheel locks and they don't need the customer key. So I told him if that was true then why the rep told me the mechanic need the wheel lock and tell him where it was. He came out saying that the rep asked me to see if I still have it. He then tell me that he can have it replace but I will need to purchase the wheel locks not charge on labor, i was already on their part department website and it was going for $36.00 for new set of wheel locks. He comes out saying it costs $80 but he can bring it down to $60.00 . I confronted him about why they are selling the wheel locks for $36.00. He makes the excuses that website provides discounts that dealers don't get. So I told him that I could purchase parts from the same place they do services and I would pay a cheaper price then if the mechanic requests the parts from the parts department ? He told me yes, that it is cheaper for customer to get the parts from their part departments then for them to get it themselves. I told him that they are ripping off customers. I will get the wheel locks and have them replace later this week, but never again will I be taking my vehicle to this service department.

First thing I did when I purchased the car is remove the lock nuts and replace them with regular lug nuts.
No one steals rims around here they just steal the entire car so locks wont be any help to me.
Also if ever my wife or daughter is driving and needs to change out a flat they wont have any issues.

I don't know if the wheel locks are coded to your VIN, perhaps has the parts department if it is.
You are the first of a few threads about wheel locks that state not having the lock information.
My car came new with them installed, and the package with a card containing the number of the key if I wanted to order a 2nd one.
If that master number is programmed into the account for the car (as part of the VIN), see if they can order one for you.
It's pretty clear that you aren't going to get away with them giving you a free set of wheel locks.

If you are not set on retaining the locks, order a set of lug nuts from a Toyota shop online for a small fraction of what you will pay at the parts counter.
I think the online cost is around $3 vs. $9 at the parts counter.

If you are set on keeping the wheel locks, order a new set (if you have the XSE with a special color) or just buy a set and have a tire shop install them.
The shops remove wheel locks without the proper key all the time.

The genuine Toyota wheel locks are made by McGard: Wheel Locks – McGard

They have a way to order new keys on their web site.

At one time, all Toyota dealers were required to have a set of wheel lock keys so they didn't need to use the owner's key, thus not loosing the owner's key. Not sure that is still true.

It's funny. When you search on theMcGard web site, the ones they choose for the 5th gen RAV4 are cone shaped ones which are not correct.

Mine didn't come with them but I was able to negotiated a set for free during the buying process. They basically pulled a set from the parts counter and gave them to me and I installed them myself. I registered them with McGard and ordered their pouch for the wrench handle and extra key at that time (about $20). The locking are the same as the original non-locking nuts. There is a small cone so they can be used with the spare tire but no way what McGard illustrated.

Also, when I bring mine into the dealership for tire rotation, I change out the locking with the original lug nuts just to simplify the process for them and so they wouldn't need a key. I reinstall and torque them myself once i get the car back.

Does not the LE with steel wheels require cone lug nuts? The alloy wheels on other trim levels require the flat/washer lug nuts.

That would be true. McGard didn't ask for trim level.

Me too. Those wheel locks are like a locked screen door. So easy to defeat them it just keeps honest people honest. If someone wants the wheels those wheel locks will maybe take them an extra 3 minutes to take them. I've had to remove wheel locks myself without the key when the key got messed up, wasn't too hard.

Wheel locks are a headache and a waste of money. I don’t really understand the purpose of them??? I took mine off as soon as I got my car. I’m glad I didn’t pay for them as they come free on Canadian cars. I’ve heard of problems with them cracking and breaking if they are over torqued making it very very difficult to remove.
I can go onto Amazon right now and buy a complete ‘Wheel Lock Lug Nut Remover Kit’ for $80-$100 Canadian and it will be here tomorrow. If I can buy this kit than so can thieves. I’m sure if someone wants your wheels then having a wheel lock will not slow them down at all. Especially if they have one of these kits off Amazon.
Also, as per one of the previous posts. Who steals OEM wheels anyways? They steal the whole car. You’re better off saving that money on the wheel locks and putting that money towards an OBD lock.
