i just purchased a used Toyota RAV4 2009 4wd 4 cylinder and it is making a slight whining/humming is loudest at 40km/h and is heard you until just 80km/h and then I assume lost in road noise. It is only heard when the throttle is pressed and not audible at any other time. It is typically at rpm ranges of 1.5-2.5. Let me know if anybody has similar issues or knows what this may be. I will attach a video link.

On thing to try. Turn off your radio and see if the sound goes away. A bad alternator can cause a humming sound in the radio speakers.

Here's the link to the video :

I can hear the noise a bit in the video. If the noise follows road speed and not engine speed it's probably the usual differential gear noise the many Rav4s make, mine included. After 80km/hr the pitch gets high enough that it's hard to hear or like you say it's drowned out by road noise. If the noise changes going around a curve it could be a bad wheel bearing which would have to be looked at, but bad wheel bearings make a lower pitch growl or rumble and get noticeably worse over time. It's believed that only the v6 4wd models made this noise but mine is 4cyl fwd and had been doing it for the 120k km I've driven it, it's never gotten worse, my 04 Camry with the same transaxle made the noise too, to a lessor extent but back then the transmission oil with thicker. I tell people it's just the supercharger.
