I recently purchased a 2017 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid from the dealership in March of 2022. It is currently displaying "AWD System Malfunction 2WD Mode Engaged" , "Pre-collison system malfunction visit your dealership" when I start the vehicle and put it into Drive, but the vehicle will not actually drive and tells me to put it back into Park. I'm currently unemployed and really hoping that there is a simple fix that I can do myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance from one very confused car owner.

I'm sorry you are having troubles especially during a period of unemployment.

I own a 5th gen gasoline, not hybrid, but there is a fairly wide range or sensors, fuses, hybrid battery system, and relays as well as mechanical components that can cause this to happen to a RAV4.

If money is tight:

First: Was it a Certified Used Toyota? Often they come with a decent Toyota Corp backed warranty (not a dealership warranty). This may be covered by that, towing cost included. You're also in your first year of ownership, did the dealer offer you a 1 year warranty if it wasn't Certified Pre-owned.

Second: If not, you'll need a code reader that plugs into the DLC3 (OBD2) port in your foot well area. Maybe a neighbor or friend has one they can loan you, or if you call your local AutoZone etc and explain your situation to a manager they may loan your their store reader. (Probably not but some people are cool and will help out a person who's fallen on hard times ).

If not you can find decent cheap ones on Amazon for under 20 dollars .

You may be able to use the information from this tool to determine if it is something you can fix : IE blown fuse/relay, or something you may not be able to such as the hybrid battery system or mechanical failure.

Good luck to you , we have a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum and others will hopefully have better solutions than me!

If you bought it from a dealer and it is in used car warranty warranty, call them up and they should make it right. If you bought it from a private party, you’re kinda SOL. Whomever had that vehicle before you may have done some naughty stuff to it, and then decided to sell it to someone else before the issues came to light. I see it all the time.

This is fantastic information. This is my first car purchase and I did buy it from a certified Toyota dealership. I'm unsure of the warranty I have on it. I'm currently reading through the paperwork I do have on it to see what warranty I have. When I called the dealership to ask, they said that they would have to do an hour inspection and that it would run me a few hundred dollars just to find the issue. They then would determine if the issue was under warranty. I'm just confused as to why I have to pay for it if I've recently purchased the vehicle, shouldn't it still be under some kind of warranty?

So unfortunately my paperwork says that I have an "as is - no dealer warranty: the dealer does not provide a warranty for any repairs after sale." But at the bottom it says "non-dealer warranties for this vehicle: manufacturer's warranty still applies, manufacturer's used vehicle warranty applies, other used vehicle warranty applies"

Update: I had my car towed into the dealership and the gasoline in my vehicle was bad. They said that I could talk to the gas station and they may be responsible for it. Just curious on how to go about that, as it is one of those small private owned gas stations.

Perhaps start the discussion with your car insurance company. Unsure if it would be covered but they can definitely point you in the right direction if not.

It doesn't make any sense, but if this fixed your issues, LOL. I always avoid small gas stations. 20 years ago I refueled once from a "no name" gas station, it was a little cheaper, but the car could not go over 70km/h anymore. It was like a cocktail probably, half water, half gasoline. :)

Uh oh. Depending on the severity and how long you drove it on the bad fuel, you may need a full fuel system flush, engine cleaning, a new fuel pump, and new injectors. I went through the same ordeal when my momma put a full tank of diesel in our CR-V.

Hello, how did it end? Did a simple fuel flush fixed it? I'm asking because I've went through the same thing 3 months ago, they did(Toyota dealership) a simple fuel flush and they have cleaned the tank , but now the breakdown and the same messages reappeared. The car was fine for about 4000 miles.... Thanks
