I'm planning to install car play in my RAV4 2017 XLE and was wondering whether I could install it on the default stereo system or if I should replace the head unit with an aftermarket one to do this. If installing on the existing default head unit is possible, apart from resolution related drawbacks, what are the benefits and drawbacks of installing it on it?
Appreciate any leads/advice.

@mayooran99 - my opinion - scrap the original head unit. Grab a new head unit and different speakers :) It'll make a world of difference :) For an easy button - I've always had great luck with Crutchfield.com. I have history in putting in complex stereo installs with Subs, etc. Crutchfield is simply too easy. Put your make/model in there and choose your stereo and they provide all the goodies...including directions and wiring harnesses. My 1/2 cent.

Thanks a lot for the advise. The original head unit does seem super outdated, let me look at the options in Crutchfield then. I'm not much of a prod with the DIY work in cars, may have to get help to get it installed unfortunately though.

Yeah I can understand that it doesn't seem super out of date. However, getting a better screen with better app integration (Waze, Spotify, Google Maps, etc.) is priceless compared to the existing Nav/Stereo, IMO. As far as not having DIY skills... oh you'd be quite surprised :) They're kit has wonderful instructions, and the wiring and accessory connections are also super easy! Plus...did I mention they have phone support to help you through it :) Give em a call ask them tons of questions - super helpful in the past for me. Good luck! Let us know what you end up doing!

I just bought a module that adds car play and android auto to the factory system. It's kind of a kludge, but it works. Very easy install and a much cheaper way to add car play. I would say its not perfect but does the job.
Retains all the toyota functions, steering wheel controls and backup camera. Install took about 30 minutes.

It is easy replacing the multimedia if you have all components like: "frame", the correct "CANBUS BOX", the correct plug and play Connectors & Wires".
Any case, up to this point I didn't find any support for the unique hybrid energy info and graphical display. also you could review the follow Upgrade head unit/ stereo on 2017 RAV4 Hybrid Limited
