I’ve used Castrol oils since the ‘70s, but have heard good things about Mobil-1. With the new RAV4 Hybrid, I would appreciate forum member’s thoughts on the best OW-16 oil to use for this vehicle.
Best in terms of what? Price, additive packages, shear stablity, etc.? Honestly it doesn't matter all that much if your using API-stamped oil and changing it at appropriate intervals. I personally would use Ravenol EFE 0W-16 because of its additives and shear stability claims, but you're really splitting hairs if the vehicle is used normally. Mobil 1 is cheap at about $23 for 5 quarts and will likely work just fine for you. Pair it with a decent filter and you've got yourself a cheap DIY oil change for $35.I’ve used Castrol oils since the ‘70s, but have heard good things about Mobil-1. You're not throwing away good oil if Toyota claims that you meet severe service criteria, which many may find themselves in time to time, especially considering that 0W-16 oils are inherently less shear-stable than other oils.Amsoil or Mobil 1.
For normal kind of driving.
Once a year in all my vehicles for the past two decades.
All went 150K to 200K before selling in good shape.
Unless you’re doing 20K plus a year, once a year is good.
You’re throwing away good oil in less than 10K changes.
Use a good filter too. Stay away from Frams and the like.
BTW: Amsoil introduced synthetic oils.
It’s great stuff for the price and I’ve been using it for years. The newest generation RAV4 calls for 0w-16, but 0w-20 can be used with no issues, especially if you’re in a hot climate like AZ (assuming from the name?)Have been using Costco's full synthetic in our Camry and FJ for years now with no issues...our new RAV4 is due to arrive soon and plan on using the same. Although still not sure what grade RAV's require.
I live in Arizona and use 0w~16 in my 2022 J-vin, hybrid. I used 0w~20 in my 2010. No problems. Now, I do change the oil around 5,000 miles and do it myself. Toyota oil for the first 3 changes (1,500, 5,000 & 10,000 miles) and I will use Mobil 1 going forward.Yes in AZ....hmmm 0w-16 or 20?.....have been using 5w-30 in my cars - will look into it.
$30 from Walmart for Mobil1.I’ve used Castrol oils since the ‘70s, but have heard good things about Mobil-1. With the new RAV4 Hybrid, I would appreciate forum member’s thoughts on the best OW-16 oil to use for this vehicle.
It says if 0w-20 is used the next one has to be 0w-16.It’s great stuff for the price and I’ve been using it for years. The newest generation RAV4 calls for 0w-16, but 0w-20 can be used with no issues, especially if you’re in a hot climate like AZ (assuming from the name?)
Mobil-1 is making oil for Toyota. So Toyota is crap too?mobil 1 is crap sorry guys hope u know a while back there is a law suit about them calming they are fully synthetic, but as you state for normal driving and normal oil change you aint going notice anything. when i use to run royal purple in my other car i do notice when the oil gets dirty your engine gets a little sluggish doesn't rev as fast or high. ELF was pretty good back then can't seem to find it, redline was not bad also. castrol is mobil 1, currently right now i am using idemitsu oil.
and to fully compare oil filters you would need to buy several filter brands then cut them open to compare how the filter media was built how thick, long, how many fins, then also test the pressure of the internal spring to compare to factory.
alot of company use them like i said if your using your car normaly it aint going matter, yes mobil 1 is crap compare to other brands and didn't u read the law suit part ? how is comparing oil equate to comparing a company ??Mobil-1 is making oil for Toyota. So Toyota is crap too?
Ever since I had my first drivers license in 1974, Castrol and Valvoline have been my go-to motor oils. Pennsoil and Quaker State I would never put in an engine that I wanted to keep; all the meachanics I knew told me to avoid those two because they had a higher ash content. With these new full-synthetic oils, maybe that advice is obsolete, but I've always trusted Castrol and Valvoline.I’ve used Castrol oils since the ‘70s, but have heard good things about Mobil-1. The present Mobil 1 0w16 and 0w20 both the AFE and EP versions and many other oils (including Toyota OEM TGMO) Valvoline and Castrol all claim to be "full synthetic." You have to understand the definitions and the highly technical chemistry of engine oil. TGMO and Mobil1 are Group III base oil. The Mobil1 is modified and enhanced using varying amounts of PAO. There ARE indeed better oils than TGMO, Mobil1, Castrol and Valvoline but they are Group V and EXPENSIVE. Here are some screenshots about "synthetic oil" and Mobil 1 from Bob is the Oil Guy (BITOG) forum and other sources explaining these points.mobil 1 is crap sorry guys hope u know a while back there is a law suit about them calming they are fully synthetic, but as you state for normal driving and normal oil change you aint going notice anything.
