Howdy folks,

I’m helping my mother and father sell their 98 RAV4. It’s in okay condition and not too sure if this is worth much. Trying not to go off KBB too much as some people have told me this car has some value to it. Could anyone shoot me a couple numbers they think this sucker could be worth? Just not too sure what to price it at…

a few points to mention. The clear coat is peeling on the hood a bit. There are a few door dings, and the ceiling liner is loose due to an aftermarket sunroof. We are the 2nd owners and was well taken care of by a mechanic of 20+ years. The vehicle has 231k miles and is a 4wd.

Two big factors are Automatic or Manual and how rusty or not it is underneath. Also FWD or 4WD?

Front wheel drive or 4/AWD?

You should look particularly among enthusiasts of classic SUVs and those looking for a reliable and affordable vehicle.
Bit from my personal experience, I can say that investing in professional detail, including addressing the clear coat and cleaning the interior, could increase the vehicle's curb appeal and value.

I'm sure others will chime in but a 4WD rust free '98 RAV4 that runs good would be in rather high demand.
(My run-good test for any automatic car is on an open road from stopped push the pedal on the right to the floor and hold it there until it hits 70-80 mph. The engine should run smooth and the transmission should shift w/o any hitches or hiccups.)
I am going to disagree partially with Ethan. A thorough detail won't repay you since in this case the interior looks quite nice. Maybe get some contact adhesive to fix the headliner. To repair the clearcoat would never pay you back. The rust free condition easily trumps either of these deficiencies. I do agree an early RAV4 unless it's a beat-up junker is much more that just an affordable ride.

My thoughts on price are $3K is an instant sale, maybe 4K, and if advertised widely 5K+ isn't out of reach IMO.
Just a sign in the window while you drive it around town should get you 3K, but to get what it's really worth at least put it on FB Marketplace. Craigslist is better because since it costs $5 to put up an ad there aren't tons of useless vehicles listed. eBay is also a good option. How about here on R4W classifieds?

any 4x4 that runs well is worth at least $3k at retail
yea a few miles on it.
the BIG question is timing belt service

i have seen low miles (under 100k miles) 2000 ravs for sale for $10K at retail in some markets.

Yes, a little (or a lot) of elbow grease goes a long way toward selling something used. Just make sure to use proper materials and methods. E.g., see Youtube for cleaning the seats (wet/dry vac, or steam cleaner, and ...).

For a diehard 4.1'er, and if the undercarriage is really rust-free, and if never wrecked, it would make for a nice core for a full restoration.

Just bought a clean 1997 awd auto in snow belt for $1600 CAD. Needs about $2k in work. 200k miles. No where near that good of condition. Anything Toyota has buyers lined up here in Ontario.
