One of the headlights on my 2017 RAV4 Hybrid went out. I went on Amazon and found a set of LED replacement bulbs that Amazon confirmed would fit, watched a video on YouTube, and thought it'd be an easy job. But no, the replacement bulbs did not fit. (The electrical harness fits, but the bulb doesn't fit into the car where it would lock into position.) So I went to a local auto parts store, the clerk looked up the proper replacement bulbs for my model and year, and I attempted the replacement in the parking lot. Those didn't fit either. The clerk even came out and tried, but the specified bulbs didn't fit.

The clerk said it looked like the socket you insert the bulb into was specifically made for the LED bulbs already in the car. (Please see photo.) He said I might try unscrewing the three screws on the silver plate and see if my replacements would fit then, but I'm hesitant to start disassembling things if I'm not certain of the outcome.

The old bulbs don't seem to have any branding on them besides the what looks like a serial number, but nothing came up when I googled it.

Anybody else have such a hard time simply replacing their headlight bulbs? Where should I go from here?

So I'm curious if this is stock equipment for the 2017 RAV4's lighting sockets, or whether, as the auto store clerk suggested, this silver piece with the three screws was inserted to accommodate the LED bulb that just went bad.

I'm posting this just in case anyone has a similar problem in the future. It turns out that the headlights that I'm replacing (which were installed by the dealership) include a small plastic adapter to make these particular headlight bulbs fit into the socket. (See circled-in-read area in below photo.) To remove these adapters, simply reinsert the lightbulbs and turn them further counter-clockwise until the adapters are able to easily pop out.

That was two days and three trips to the auto store for what should have been a five-minute task. Whee. :/

I know it has been a while since the last update, but I just wanted to mention that in the USA, it is not legal to install LED bulbs in a fixture that was designed for Halogens. Fog lights are OK, headlights are not.

OK, legal technicalities aside, many of us have done it. The reason LEDs are prohibited is because many (most?) of the early units resembled corn cobs, trying to get enough brightness to be useful. That would put most of the light sources (individual LEDs) outside of the focal point of the reflector, putting light EVERYWHERE except on the road.

Now there are some LEDs that are MUCH brighter, and have just two emitters, one on either side of a thin panel. The placement of these two emitters is very close to the location of the original tungsten filament, meaning that the light tends to be directed where it is supposed to be. If those lights are then adjusted to assure proper aim, nobody will probably ever know they were not stock. Since some RAV4s came with LED lights, you could try to say they are stock. I have had LED 'bulbs' in my Sienna for four years now, absolutely no problems.

the real reason any bulb or led that is not OEM specific is not legal
is photometric requirements and certification. photometrics are
all about glare, dazzle, beam spread, beam cutoff, distance spread...etc.

aftermarket stuff that is not the specific bulb number has not been tested in that specific
vehicle model and passed photometric testing...as that costs hundreds of thousands per
car make/model, so only manufacturers do the real testing. aftermarket tries to come close
but they'd go broke trying to do the same regulatory certification.

even changing the height of a vehicle by specifying different tires or suspension
requires all new photometric testing. OEM's are all set up with the equipment and
labs to do this, so it's no big deal to certify. some rando bulb or LED company
is not so equipped
