I need help.
I’ve owned by 2020 RAV4 for two years. I bought it with 14K miles and have had issues from the start. We’ve been back to the Toyota dealership to have it serviced 7 times…

Any Toyota mechanics in here? I’m at my wits end with this car.

We’ve done fuel injectors, plugs, coils, and the intake manifold.

It’s not the head gasket.

The mechanic is now saying Same code (s) all along...last thing Toyota Technical assistance stated possible accelerator pedal assembly…

But now it’s throwing a cylinder 4 misfire too, and that’s new.

I need help… and probably a new car before this thing is off the extended warranty because no one can seem to fix it. Pic shows current codes.

Year: Toyota RAV4 gas

Bought it with 14K miles. Right from the start it ran rough upon idle. Brought it right back but the dealership “couldn’t replicate it” even though they even admitted the car wasn’t right. Brought it to a different dealership 3 months later for the same issues and got the same response. Couldn’t replicate. Finally a check engine light popped up. Got the first two codes listed on my picture.
Fast forward to now, car has 84K on it. Still throwing the same codes, and now cylinder 4 misfire. Just had another mechanic pull a bulletin. He said this:
This is real easy to diagnose. The Toyota dealer should have caught it. There is a Toyota Technical Service Bulletin for this. Look up and print T-SB-0010-24 dated Feb. 21, 2024. Take the car and the TSB to a good dealer. Since you are out of warranty you have to pay for the repair...and it won't be cheap. The exhaust valve hydraulic lifters are defective and need to all be replaced under the exhaust camshaft. That is the cause of these DTCs.

This issue affects Camrys and other models besides RAV4s.

Welcome to this forum! That was ME on the Reddit Rav4Club under my alternate nom de guerre that provided that TSB. The TSB has some language that the exhaust valve lifters issue is with the engine coolant below about 40 degrees F. I don't think the temperature is that significant if one or more exhaust valve hydraulic lifters has totally crapped out. Does anyone have any ideas on that?

lol! That is so funny! And thank you! Can you see how desperate I am at this point? It’s been two years with no answers and the same problem. I’m kinda hoping you’re right about this. Fingers tightly crossed.

Yeah, unfortunately you got stuck with someone else's problem car. And the reason no one can fix it is that they don't have the experience to diagnose the problem. Just by reading the posts, I thought it was a valve issue but no idea if it was right or not. Then Tazio mentioned hydraulic lifters which makes it seem plausible. Still not many know how to diagnose. Would probably call up corporate to see if they can help defray the cost before actually okaying the work??

Better if you know someone who can do the work and you pay for just the parts and maybe beer??

I had a certified master mechanic look at it a year ago and he gave a list of things to look at… the dealership completely disregarded those concerns. They’ve been working with Toyota on what steps to take.

I'd look at, initially:
1) the tsb that tazio mentioned
2) pull the plugs to see what is going on(the ends of the plugs will tell a lot)
3) check and or replace(if never done) the pcv in the crankcase vent system as it could be clogged
If it were mine, I just base line things. IE just replace the plugs, whilst checking the old to see what detonation quality is like. When replacing the pcv, I'd clean out the TB and install a bottle chevron techron concentrate($10 @ walmart) into the petrol tank(help clean the injectors). It would be a decent/reasonable idea to ohm out the coils to make sure they check out. Good luck with it, sorry to hear. Hope you get it righted.

the plugs were one of the first things the dealership checked and replaced followed by coils. I don’t think anyone has mentioned the PCV in the crank case.

I hope it’s righted as well!

I believe there is a tsb on the pcv for the Rav4. If they pull the air intake for the TB, they will be able to tell if the pcv could be at issue as there will be a fair bit of coking, blow-by, and debris.

There was a Corolla owner who after much effort and useless dealer gouging discovered that his intake manifold was cracked.
It wasn’t exactly easy to see either. It sounds like it might be worth removing it and inspecting it very closely.
They replaced the intake manifold… check engine light came back on less than a week later. 😭 They did note that the amount of carbon build up was excessive. They also fear that someone might have at one point run diesel in the car because they could smell it…. Not sure you would still smell that a year and a half after buying the car, but I guess anything is possible.

Wow, yeah that TSB would probably be worth looking at, and the carbon in the intake manifold would support something like a collapsed lifter or whatever it may be. After all that time driving it like that there might be more of a mess with carbon deposits around the piston rings however.

Sorry I didn’t see that the intake manifold had been replaced, isn’t usually something that goes bad, so most pass over it.

The PDF is sad because all the super experienced dealership boys should know about the issue, as it isn't limited to the Rav. Seems to be also posted in your reddit too. Did you not read it?

What do you think about the temperature of the coolant mentioned in the TSB? I think if a hydraulic lifter has failed on an exhaust valve then the coolant temperature would not matter.
