On the other hand, paying somebody who has done it before may save you time and injury.

mreg, there is a lot of mis-understanding about serpentine belts. A few small cracks are perfectly normal, but there are limits. For instance:
3 or more cracks in a 3-inch length.
Cracks that extend across multiple ribs.
Cracks that extend from the rib tip into the body of the belt.
Chunks missing.
These are all reasons to change the belt.
Some people panic if they see even one crack...if you can see more than 3 inches of the belt and don't have any of the conditions above, you're fine.

Well I took a look down into the engine compartment and was able to see the belt on two pulleys. I did not see any cracks on the sections I saw, which were certainly longer than three inches, and I started the car a few times to move the belt around, and still saw no blemishes. Obviously without seeing for myself I can't state positively that you're good, but if you don't see any of the conditions listed in my reply above, I see no reason to change the belt.
Remember, too, that Pep Boys have a vested interest in selling you products and services. I wouldn't be surprised if they saw 1 or 2 small cracks and figured they could scare you into having it changed prematurely.
Today's serpentine belts are a far cry from the old V-belts and last a LOT longer.

put new belt on today!
Well think I started this thread a while back. Tha rav turned 100,000 miles aboaut a month a go.Belt looked good but thats enough miles for me on the oem belt. A socket wrench and a 19mm socket off in 5 minutes.Now after I found the routing diagram on here and got it set. I realized after fighting to get the belt on the alt pully was not going to happen.So holding down on the tensioner pulley and sliding the belt on to the water pump pully was the best way.Now I know duh!

I saw on two guys garage that the sepentine belts today dont really crack like thay use to. My old belt after 100,000 not one crack on any where.They were showing the tool "well look like a tooth pick" that you set in the groves in the belt. If it went flush then time to change. It had to set up above the groves.Now looking at the new and old belts you can see the groves are worn on the old one.
good catch carbon yea dont think I will have her that many miles from now.Although by then I wouldnt have to change the oil any more just put a new filter on her boo- ya mother ship!
