Hi. So I bought a brand new 2009 RAV4 and have not yet put on 4k miles. Now that I'm in colder weather there seems to be an annoying, constant clicking sound coming from the dash/windshield when driving on pavement, potholes, bumps. The dealer saw it and said it was fine but didn't do anything to it. When taking it off the lot it was making the sounds so I drove with the tech who said it's normal and not to worry about it. Since then (~2 weeks) it's gotten much worse: louder, more constant clicking. I took it back in and they applied a "vibration pad" to the cowl (or so they say) but state it's perfectly "normal" for cars to make these annoying sounds when driving.

I've read other forums where ppl have used grease, WD40 to fix the problem. However, my stupid dealer will not do this. What else should I try? I'm taking it to the other Toyota dealer and having them take a look at it as I feel these yahoos don't know what the hell a manufacturer defect is.

Check the sun visor.

This might sound silly but, check to make sure the driver's side sun visor is all the way up.

I looked for that rattle for the better part of a day before I found the cause.

If it isn't all the way up and touching the headliner, it will rattle

I really felt dumb at that point.

If that's not it, look into the mirror rattle TSB; I chased quite a bit of dead ends before trying the tape on the underside of the mirrors.

I have this problem also. I have not yet taken it to the dealership though. I try to avoid them as much as possible but haven't been able to isolate the noise myself. It sounds like it is coming from the windshield.

MY 07 Tundra was doing this when I first bought it. Especially in cold weather. On the inside where the plastic runs at the top the windshield I found that the plastic was rubbing the windshield. I slipped little piece of a doubled over paper between the spot and the windshield..... Sound gone.

I have had another vehicle do it before. (I can't remember the model). In that case the windshield was being pinched in one of the corners.

Just a couple thoughts.. but its not normal and I wouldn't let the dealer tell me any different. I would ask to talk to the regional service manager for Toyota and see what they say. If that didn't work, then I would call Customer Service at 800-331-4331

The noise I had was a rattling/clicking noise and it came from sunglasses in the overhead holder. These kind of noises can be an absolute headache to try and chase down

Bump - has anyone found a cause or resolution to this?

My RAV has started to do it as well. It sounds like it's coming from the dash, and it's just a gentle clicking that happens when I get onto rutted roads (which is nearly every side street in Calgary these days).

Any input, of course, would be greatly appreciated.

Mine was doing the same thing. I found that it was the trim piece that fits around the instrument cluster. That plastic trim piece was rubbing the surrounding area of the dash when going over potholes, rougher road, etc. and caused squeeks and creaks. I took it off and put felt tape around it and now it seems fine.

can someone do a write up of this?
This? No two people on this thread are having the same noise, as far as I can tell.

If you have a squeak or clicking noise, I suggest you isolate it by feeling around what you can reach. Let somebody else drive if the noise is not right at the driver's position. Determine the place where the minimum pressure has the maximum noise reduction. Then either isolate, lubricate, or immobilize the pieces rubbing against each other. Squeaky shoes can often be quieted by a tiny amount of grease between leather pieces, believe it or not.

A bit of a paper matchstick wedged between two rubbing pieces can be good.

Here is one search that may give you some ideas:

i kinda had a similar problem. but my problem was kinda obvious.
it was from my rear mirror...where it was glued to the wind shield
a warm summer day i decided to press that rubber thing hard against the windshield for like 5 mins or so, hoping it'd glue properly...i never had that noise again for maybe 8 months
