rear wheel abs sensor removal

I am wanting to pull the rear wheel abs sensor to clean it. Can someone tell me how to extract the sensor from the hub assembly. Does the round piece just pry out ,as it would just be a press fit holding it in? The front was quick and easy. Thanks

I've removed my left rear sensor a couple of times. You have to work it out carefully and gently after removing the hold down bolt. Mine was pretty rusted in so some penetrating oil helped. Try twisting it a little.
Cleaning it last year reduced the frequency of the VSC/ABS/4WD/Brake lights coming on but I get a 34 code about any time I read it. So I just ordered a new one. $151.31 shipped from www.theautopartsshop.com

Fred has the 4WD, which uses Rear Speed Sensor (for 4WD).

He does not have "Skid Control Sensor (for 2WD)"

I suggest you download the 2006 Service Manual, and check the BC (Brake Control) section. Then you can get those pages and more.

Carbon, thanks for the references , I was hoping not to have to completely disassemble the hob to access the sensor. Think I am going to try a couple other things before doing that. Thanks again bspencer

If you have 2WD you need to replace the whole vehicle not the sensor! :rolleyes:

Curious if the 2006 Rav4 has a different wheel sensor than the ones described in the various "wheel sensor cleaning" sites? I've been having the famous 4 light ABS/Brake/VSC issue lately and the codes returned the right rear wheel speed sensor. I took the wheel off and removed the sensor this weekend (what a pain.. it was rusted in the hole) but the sensor itself is an enclosed black piece of plastic and was clean as a whistle. There was no metallic strip covered in dirt as described on the various posts, but rather a nice clean black sensor. Am I missing something here? What is there to clean off?

How did you actually remove the sensor? Were you able to get it without removing the hub assembly?

So, can anyone tell me if the rear speed sensor just gets pulled out? As crisko semi-stated above... 2006 RAV4 codes tell me the right rear sensor has foreign object attached to end of sensor. Code 38. I cannot find a definitive answer for this question. I don't want to brake it!

Yes, you have to lube it real good and twist it side to side gently, but it cam be worked out. It does not screw in. What I found was the rust buildup had probably increased the gap to the starwheel. Cleaning it all up good kept the lights off for maybe six months. When they came back on I replaced the sensor.

Thank you very much! Seems kind of odd that nothing is really holding it in place, but it's not coming out now on it's own!:thumbs_up:
