I have a 2010-FWD,2.5 RAV4, transmission destroyed itself after 200k miles, Reverse/low gear brake is literally destroyed,3rd gear planetary has chunk broken off. Anyhow, I can find lots of 2005-2008 U241E on line, but none for 2009-2012. My question is, will the JDM U241E from 2005-2008 work? I know Speed sensors will need to be changed, one JDM dealer said yes, one said no, and with the wide knowledge the forum members have, does anyone have experience with this swap? Need help fast as down to one car and running lots of miles on an old Subaru with my wife and myself having to opposite directions during the day.

Do a search in 4.3 Mechanical for the transmission code. There’s a lengthy thread from a member who had to do similar to his. He made several mistakes during his process, so I suggest you read that thread carefully.

It MAY work but there will be hurdles.

Thanks for the reply,I have read the post from JimR about his JDM story. I picked up a U241E from Dallas JDM, actually sent my wife as I had to work, shout out to them, I dont remember the mans name but he helped my wife take pictures of the unit, pulled the connectors so I could compare to my unit, they loaded it in a rental vehicle and wrapped and tied it down really well so it wouldn't roll or leak ATF all over the place. So,I pulled the old unit with out removing the rear cross member, just dropped the front with the engine supported, had just enough room to drop it and swing forward and then down. I used a cherry picker to lift the replacement up into place as this game me more ability to turn and swing the unit in and went smoother than I thought it would. Have all the mounts in,today I'll install the axles and get it on the ground to finish hook up,I had to replace the sensors and the neutral safety switch, I drained the torque converter and the trans. I ordered Tech Stream 16, should be here today, I also have a Matco Determinator with an OTC smart OBDII cable and a BlueDriver OBDII unit with latest Revision down loaded on my phone,I am interested in seeing how each of these work. I'll update after I get it running.

So, got the trans in,all connected. I bypassed the cheesy little can cooler and added a "U" tube air/oil cooler in front of the A/C condenser.Filled it with fluid and took a short drive, 1-2 shift was very smooth, 2-3 a little hard, slight bang into gear,3-4 shift was good. I could not get my laptop to "see" the driver for the VCI cable,I tried everything I could and got my electrical engineer son to remote in still no go. So I just drove it to work, about 30 miles each way, by the time I got home the 2-3 shift was much improved, 1-2 and 3-4 shifts were very good, all in all not nearly as hard as replacing the engine in my daughters 2000 RAV4. Spent about $650.00 including the rental vehicle. I plan to change the fluid at least 2 more times after I get some more miles on it.

After driving for a week, it appears the ECU has learned fast, the shifts are much smoother than the old unit ever did, no slippage, no noise,no leaks. I plan on driving it for a month, change the fluid, drive another 30 days or so and repeat 3 times to try and flush all the old fluid out. All in all it was a workout for my 66 year old body and mind but the wife is happy and in the end, that's all that matters. So now my boss has an '06 with 200k and AWD he wants to sell.........................
