Hi, I have a brand new 2022 RAV4 Prime SE with Android Auto. It works fairly well, except when I listen to an app that is not available in Android Auto. For instance, I use The Economist app on my phone to listen to the audio edition. The sound comes through the sound system via Android Auto when connected to the USB. But if I change the volume it switches to Spotify. Then I have to manually stop Spotify and restart The Economist on my phone. Is this a known problem? Is there anything I can do, besides getting a life and not listenting to The Economist?🤣

I've had the same issue. I just connect my phone via bluetooth unless I want to actually listen to Spotify. Kind of annoying, as I'd like to be able to use Google Maps on the touchscreen while listening to a podcast or something from Youtube.
I thought of that, but the Google Maps on the touchscreen is tough to pass up. I have good news, though: A few days ago there was an automatic Android system update on my phone that fixed the problem! Now I can change the volume without it changing the audio to a different app!

I had been vexed by this problem since I like to listen to youtube playlists on the road.

I stumbled upon a solution after testing out a free trial of Youtube Music (which of course works great w/ AA if you pay for it). But after the Youtube Music free trial ended, the app wouldn't play music any more through the car -- i think that's only available to paid subscribers.

The upside of this is that, if you set Youtube Music as your default music player w/o a subscription, you can change the volume all you want and your currently playing app (in my case, Youtube) will keep on playing without interruption while AA is running!

You may have to download Youtube Music (or any other paid service) and set it as your default app for AA. On my Samsung phone, I open the “Settings” menu and search for “Google Assistant.” Then click "Music" and then select Youtube Music as the default.

Last week my Samsung Galaxy S21 received an over the air Android update. After installing the update, I can now change the volume when listening to The Economist without the audio switching to Spotify (or something else). Problem solved!

Another update: I don't know what changed, but I am back to when I change the volume in the RAV4, the audio changes from the app I was listenting to to Spottify. Very disappointing.

I only listen to music when I am in my car, so I have no real experience to share any anecdotes. However, I do have a volume issue when listening to Spotify. When connected to the USB plug, the volume will not adjust up or down. It is like it is disabled when connected via USB. But, when I am listening through bluetooth only, I can adjust the volume up and down. I have a 2020 XLE.

Another update: I called Toyota a couple of weeks ago and they told me to make sure Bluetooth is off. I tried turning Bluetooth off and then the volume adjustment via the knob worked fine. Then something change, maybe another Android update. Now, if I'm connected via USB it keeps turning Bluetooth on and connecting! I even tried to unpair via my phone, and it still connects via Bluetooth! Unreal. So if I have to adjust the volume for the Economist, the Spotify app comes on at loud volume and scares the crap out of my wife. I have to pause Spotify before she turns the volume on the RAV4 down, or else I have to do it all over again. It would probably be funny for someone to watch.

I have found that every time you plug in your phone via usb, bluetooth automatically starts. I don't think the issue is with bluetooth, but rather with the usb. Try connecting via bluetooth without plugging into the usb and see what happens. If you need to charge your phone, use one of the other usb ports vs. the one that connects to the infotainment system.

Tonight I unpaired from the RAV4 side, and it stopped connecting via Bluetooth to the phone. Now I can change the volume without switching apps.
