Is there a way to add apps to Android Auto or are they preset? I see a weather radar app that I would like to have on my screen but I don't know how. If I can't add apps, does Google update & add apps to it?

You can add "Android Auto"-enabled apps on your smartphone, and they should automatically appear in the list of apps on your car's Android Auto app display. The apps that are not "Android Auto"-enabled will not appear on car's display. It's up to individual app developer whether to make their app "Android Auto"-enabled or not.

Edit: Just to give you direct example: if you will download the weather app called "Weather & Radar - Storm radar" on your phone - it will appear in your car's display and you can launch it from your car's display and see weather radar on your car's display, because this app's author enabled "Android Auto" functionality in it.

As @Omgwtfbbq stated, any Android Auto enabled apps will show up automatically. You can flag apps that you don't want to show up in Android Auto, but you cannot force an app into the list.

To filter the list, on my Samsung I select Settings -> Connected Devices -> Android Auto -> Customize launcher. There you can uncheck apps that you don't wantbto show up. Note that some apps cannot be removed from the list.

Apps for Auto (Apple or Android) really must be planned that way from the ground up to be accepted.
You can't just take a gambling app or an XXX-video app and 'enable Auto'. At the very least, most apps should enforce "car dead stopped in Park" or similar low-hazard condition.

As of last year, the list was very short:
"Android Automotive is getting its 38th app: Waze"- 12/6/2022

Google for Developers > Design for Driving > MUST, SHOULD, and MAY for apps

Example Settings overlay on AAOS
SHOULD App developers should:
Keep settings simple and easy to navigate
Include only settings that are necessary for app use (such as account info, app preferences, and sign-in/sign-out) or relevant to listening to media in the car (for example, turning off explicit content)
Make all settings accessible from a single screen, if possible
Avoid use of dialogs beyond simple confirmation
Design for cars: Keep in-car settings to the minimum required for that environment, and make them easy to find and use.

Could anybody at any point let me know how to add applications to Android Auto? I'm explicitly attempting to add Illuminating presence webcasts.
As explained earlier, the Android Auto compliant apps will automatically show up on the list. The only option would be to contact the app developer and ask them to make their app Android Auto compliant.

you need to get the app on your phone and look to see if it shows up in Android Auto which is in settings, connected devices. you can add it to your menu if it's not already. If it doesn't show up there, then it's not a compatible app.
