Best oil for oil burning 2007 I4?

My 2007 I4 has abruptly started using oil. I have been using Motorcraft semi-synthetic 5-20 the last several changes, which is made by Conoco, and considered a good buy as it has a large synthetic component, but sells for dino prices. I'm not a believer in synthetic but don't mind it if it doesn't cost me more.

I won't be able to get to the dealer for a while, and need to do an oil change, so Iam wondering if I might improve oil mileage by going to a 5-30, or even 15-something.

How much oil? How many miles? If it exceeds what Toyota deems is "normal" then you may have a case. Were it mine I would switch to a regular (or high mileage depending on your miles) 5W30 and monitor the consumption. It seems that high oil consumption is common with the 2.4l engine as mileage accumulates from what I have read on this forum.

One example: http://www.rav4world.com/forums/99-4-3-mechanical/86931-burning-oil.html

Was there any event associated with the abrupt beginning of the oil burning?

And how abrupt?

No event, its very odd since everything seems to be fine and there is no sign of leakage, fouling plugs or other things I associate with elevated oil consumption. Can't pinpoint the time, I was not driving the car for a couple months due to medical issues but my wife was driving it regularly.

And consumption is not above what Toyota allows (not that iot really matters as the car is not under warranty anymore). Toyota says a quart per thousand miles is still OK. But while adding 1/2 quart or so ever other gas fill may be OK with Toyota it gives me the creeps.

Sometimes going to a heavier weight oil may help. I was having to add some oil between changes on a BMW using the specified 5-30W synthetic. I starting using Mobil 1 0-40W synthetic and it made a difference.

Agreed, 10W-30 or 10W-40. That's all we had 10 years ago - well, maybe 20.

Either clogged PCV, oil rings are stuck, or one of the rings broken. Change the PCV, and consider MMO or Kreen piston soak (google for those and you will see what it means).

I've heard there is some help with using Lucasoil Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer, if the problem is valve seals.

Step up to 5w30 in a high mileage formulation as well.

I'd say that what you eventually does depends on how much longer you intend on keeping your Rav. If it's for the long term, I think it's not a good choice to just stick heavier oil in it (which would work) but to try to find out and fix the cause. Other than something like running the engine without oil, or driving it really hard after an oil change is due, it's hard to imagine the cause is wear. Instead it sounds like something on the more minor side isn't working correctly.

Just found the oil consumption TSB over in the Service Bulletin area. Apparently there is a defect in some of these cars that causes high oil consumption, and Toyota will fix it under the 60K powertrain warranty but only if the car uses more than 1 qt. oil per 1200 miles (!).

So off to the dealer, wish me luck. Not sure what I'll do if they won't fix it, the repair involces best I can tell removing the engine and replacing the pistons and rings, would be pretty expensive if T won't pay.

If they won't pay or at least help then it's buy oil by the case or get rid of the car. It will take time for them to do the test and validate (or not) the consumption.

This sucks my 2007 rav4 is going through to much oil and also has the steering clunk noise,it has 101.000 ks on it,and we paid 40,000 for this rav. Starting the oil consumption test tomorrow. I am afraid that it will be just under what it needs to be to get Toyota to fix it.My gmc has 316,000 ks just came back from a 2000 k trip oil still on full.My rav4 should not be using any oil on a 5000 k change. If Toyota does not fix this then I will have to dump it on some other poor soul, this is not right. If anyone knows who to complain to please let me know,I think we should all get together and let Toyota know it should be a recall. P.S this car has already had many recalls, toyota is not any better than any other manufactuer, everybody screws up, but what matter,s to me is if you fix it.Will not buy another Toyota.

You paid 40,000 WHAT for that RAV? Dollars? You are also responding to a thread that is three years old.
