Hi all,

My dealer just called me today (jan 25th). He had a cancellation for a black XLE (shipping in April) and offered me to take it instead of the white I ordered, since I was next in line. Call me crazy, but since I have absolutely no desire for this color (it was my last choice), so I passed. Told him if he had a silver or lunar rock I would be interresed though.

So... He also confirmed I'm next on the list (I was the 4th on the list two weeks ago), likely to ship in late April or May if all goes well as I predicted, maybe a little faster... Fingers crossed.
Holy crap! I can't believe you declined! Incredible... well, that simply means you're not in a hurry and that's fine... I would've taken the black though as this is the color I ordered.
Over the past 30 years, I had 1 gold 🤮, 2 reds, 2 silver, 2 blue, 1 beige 🤮, 1 green and 1 white cars... but never black! You can imagine how I would have jumped on this offer!

Yeah, you're right but the Canadian XLE is more equipped than the one in the US (among others, the electric tailgate and moon roof are included). Correct me if I'm wrong but in the US, you have to select the Premium if you want those additions. I don't get it why Toyota does that... it doesn't make any sense...
True. The XLE Premium is sold as a trim level, but shows up on the window sticker as an accessory add on. Strange.

Done by the distributors who seem to order from the factory and make the ones they think will sell available to dealers. In the US, the configs have not always been available as back when Toyota was trying to get established across the 48 lower states, they sold distribution right for SE and SW and those people set policy on, for example, what dealer processing fees and what port installed add-ons go into every car sold in their region. Explains why I have bought outside the region wher I live sometimes.

Very interesting... I didn't know that... thanks for the clarification! (y)

I didn't even know they had closed plants in ontario until I saw your post today
Your right we have to be unusually patient but this one we can't blame it on covid19
It's because of the world chip shortage
Your dealer probably does have a waiting list so they know who get which hybrids has they receive them you just have to ask them
Good luck and stay heathy
Just don't forget to ask for your model
My dealer has several list 1 general all rav4 hybrid models then 1 different one for each seperate model LE ,XLE XSE PRIME LIMITED
So if somebody ordered a limited hybrid after me he might get it before me but the dealer can ask if you want it 1st
Example if I'm 1st on the list for my xle hybrid I ordered but he receives 3 limited hybrid and they were all ordered after me he will ask if I want to upgrade 1st
😵‍💫 that seems so unfair. I ordered a Limited and assumed I would get it before someone who ordered a different model. I could see if a car came in and was declined because the person changed their mind or whatever that this car would be offered to the next person on the list. But just offering a car that you ordered to someone else seems very underhanded.

Let us know as soon as you have your allocation #, I’ll do the same 😉
I called my dealer yesterday (Friday) and we had a good half hour chat together. He explained me the whole situation in details. Now everything is more clear although not necessary reassuring…

2022 RAV4 Hybrids (all trims) allocations started at the beginning of January and they are splitted « au prorata » between the 65 dealers in the province of Quebec. My dealer has had so far 14 allocations. Planned deliveries for those is mid March / beginning of April.

He told me I’m presently 22nd on the waiting list for all Hybrids (besides the 14 already allocated). He told me that in order to get my vehicule mid-May the latest, he needs to have at least 22 new allocations early February the latest.

I asked him to add (besides black) 3 more colors (ruby, dark grey and white) so I have more chances to get one in time. That’s going to f…g tight for me as I’m going in Florida May 27 and I need my car!

I feel I’m repeating myself but…. fingers crossed…

I’m in BC and ordered in late Aug. so frustrating. I ordered Blizzard Pearl Limited H but last month added that I’m flexible on colour. The only colour I really don’t want is black! We have 2 black vehicles and they only look good the day you wash them! I would take Ruby, Silver, possibly the dark grey. I’d have to think about Blueprint. That was my initial order but when I saw it in a parking lot I changed my mind. It’s so dark it almost looked black.

I was at my local bank recently And kept noticing a new Rav Limited hybrid (black lol) parked in front of the barber next door for a few weeks. Last week I parked next to it and the guy happened to come out. We had a chat, turns out he ordered around same time as me, in Aug; at a different dealership and got his a few weeks ago, it was a 2021.

And you want the ICE broken in before you make the Florida trip.

Exactly Mike.

I need to know what I'm going to do. We're leaving on May 27 so if my dealer assures me I'll get my car on May 15 the latest, I'll be good...

We already have the condo in Clearwater Beach (near Tampa) and in the worse case scenario, I can cancel the reservation 2 days before we leave with a full refund. My wife, I and our little Molly (7.5 lb doggy) would really love to travel in our RAV4. If I'm 100% sure I'll get it then it's going to be a piece of cake, but if we don't, we'll have to find flights and if we can't we'll have to cancel our vacation...

You can call it "misery of the rich" but the fact remains that because of this damn pandemic, we haven't traveled since 2018 and we used to travel 2 times a year...

I'm no believer but trust me, these days, I'm praying like crazy!

I’m missing Florida too, love the gulf coast, St Pete Beach! But you should be going now while it’s still cold here! Ha!
I would recommend articles on breaking in new car. I can’t remember what site I read it on but I’m sure it said something about long road trips not good During break in period?

It was a problem back then. Long drives will not damage today’s cars. They don't need a break-in period anymore. It is recommended though to keep the car's speed under control say avoid fast starts, going beyond 130 km/h (80 mph) and keep the engine under 2500 rpm if possible when on highways. Also, The RAV4 has an 8 speed engine so RPM will always be very low on highways and going to Florida I’ll be on highways most of the time.

I would love to go right now as we are freezing here. January is totally insane this year. When I woke up this morning it was -26C outside besides wind factor… brrrr!!! Can’t wait for spring! 😝

🥶 that’s cold!!! 6C here in BC and ☔
Thanks for the info on break in. Totally jealous of your Gulf Coast trip! I wish driving was an option for me! But a little to far from BC.

The Rav4 hybrid does not have the 8-speed transmission the ICE version does. And yes they do need a break-in-period to allow the rings to seat with the cylinder walls.

From the manual for a '19 hybrid Rav4:

"To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended:
  • For the first 200 miles (300 km): Avoid sudden stops.
  • For the first 500 miles (800 km): Do not tow a trailer.
  • For the first 600 miles (1000 km):
  • Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
  • Avoid sudden acceleration.
  • Do not drive continuously in low gears.
  • Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods."

Mike: I'm officially hiring you as my personnal information provider on the RAV4 (just kidding ;)) Thanks for the info though. It is truly useful (y)

My reply to "SueM" was not based on facts. Only on my personnal experience. I've had cars for 35 years now and in my experience, today's car are way more efficient than the ones in the past.

I totally agree with you about the precautions we have to take. It also makes sense that the manufacturer strongly suggest to respect those because not all drivers are like me. Let me explain:

I'm a turtle... a "very boring light foot driver" (read: cautious). I never go over 70 mph (about 110 km/h) on highways and I always use cruise control when I can. In city, I never do fast starts, I always keep the cars in front of me far away so I never have to break hard, etc... In consequence, I know that even if I leave for a 6000 km (3700 miles) road trip with a brand new car, I won't have any problems as I will not beat it... Driving like this over the past 35 years resulted in never having any problems with all of the cars I owned so far...

You are right about the transmission. The 2022 Hybrids have a continuously variable transmission (CVT) but I think these are extremely efficient so I don't worry about RPM.

The Toyota hybrid CVT is completely different than the "classic" CVT in an ICE vehicle. The classic CVT is a chain or belt that runs between two variable diameter pulleys. The hybrid CVT is a simple planetary gear set and the gear ratio is adjusted by an electric motor that drives the sun gear. This video (shown before on this forum) explains how this works:

Wow! I've never watched a 40 minutes long video talking about how an engine works. I found it surprisingly very interesting and quite impressive! Great technology! Thanks for sharing Mike!

Hi all,

I just got an email from my dealer! I finally have an allocation for my futur 2022 RAV4 Hybrid XLE and it's going to be ruby red! 😍

The initial color I had chosen was black but when I spoke to the dealer last Friday, I told him I would take any color but the blue and silver.
Adding 3 more color choices surely helped to get an allocation so quickly (only 3 days later).

Production process will start shortly and planned delivery date is mid-April. This is perfect for us as we will have enough time for the break-in period before we leave to Florida!

My wife is so happy she hit her head on the ceiling when I told her :ROFLMAO:. I even think the dog noticed something great is coming...

Have a great day!

Congrats! Very exciting news. I hope I get some news soon too. I didn’t name any alternative colours, just had that I’m flexible on colour. 🤞
