Check engine light problem?

We have had our 2021 Rav4 Prime for almost 6 months now and absolutely love it. We've only had to fill up the tank 2-3 times when going on road trips. HOWEVER, we have had one very annoying issue: the check engine light has come on 3 times. We have brought the car back to the dealership each time. Each time the dealership basically said they don't know why it's coming on. It seems to be some issue related to the battery pack, but I haven't gotten a clear answer. They just turn it off every time and send me home, saying that it "might happen again" and "there is no resolution to the problem right now". They insist that the car is safe to drive and I have no reason to think that's not true, but quite frustrating to say the least. Anyone have similar issues?

I would go past the Dealer Service Department and contact Toyota Corporate Customer Service (now THERE'S an oxymoron) and obtain a case number . . . . including referencing ALL Service Work Order Invoice Numbers you have for each visit where the Service Drones simply cleared the codes without ANY diagnostic work.

Hell, YOU could do that with a modest investment in your own OBDII Scan tool, Carista, BlueDriver, etc., etc.

It really is unbelievably disappointing that for every post extolling the successful Service experience with a Toyota Service Department, there are abundant posts like this one where the owner experience is like a satirical comedy torture movie, with Service Departments populated by incompetent morons, clowns, and buffoons.

Maybe show this to your dealership. Not sure if this is your specific problem, but it's a known issue with some Prime's. This will cause a check engine light (MIL).

Please call and try to get the code they cleared to turn off the check engine light. Is there anything written on the receipt regarding diagnostic code? We want to help you investigate this issue, but you are not giving us much to work on.

It might be a good idea to watch these videos and you might be able to transfer some knowledge to your dealership:

The diagnostic error code stored in the vehicles’s ECUs that is causing the CALL DEALER message. If we know what the code is, then we can troubleshoot/understand/learn from it. You/dealer need a OBD reader to get/clear the error code.

This is just a heads up on a recent problem I am having with my 2021 Rav4 Prime. I have about 1200km on the car and love it. I had about 1/2 tank of gas left in the tank and went to fill it up. As I have done all my life, I filled the tank, and after the fuel nozzle shut itself off, I topped the tank up, as I want to get a more accurate mileage reading after my next fill up. The next day was a very warm day, and the car sat outside at the golf course parking lot for about 5 hours. I go to leave and get a check engine message and to go see a dealer. I did that and after checking the fault codes, they say there is a fault with a vapour sensor on top of the fuel tank, that needs to be replaced.
It then dawned on me that the engine has not run since I fuelled it up. Every time in the past after I have fuelled up, of course, I start burning fuel as I drive, and there was never a problem. My theory is that the hot day sitting with a full fuel tank caused the fuel to expand, causing the sensor to fail or stick. I asked them to just remove a few litres of fuel from the tank to see if that fixes the problem. They said there is no way to siphon off the fuel from these tanks, but there has to be a way to remove fuel form a tank. Anyway they are in the process of replacing the sensor. The moral of the story is don't top up the fuel tank, after the auto shut off of the fuel nozzle.

I do top off, not excessively, but yes, I do not settle on the first auto click off.

I am also cognizant of the potential conditions/situation that may create and do what needs to be done to mitigate it. Whether that is making sure that the fill occurs at the height of a warm/hot cycle (it aint gonna get any hotter and create evaporation/expansion) or include some driving between the fuel topping off event and parking in the garage so as to burn off some fuel . . . . .

If the Vapor Canister becomes involved it is my understanding that the system will throw a Fault Code. I'm squarely inside the "Get Off My Lawn" age group and I've never encountered/experienced an issue or problem with a vapor recovery canister system . . . . . . evar . . . . . . solid knuckle wrap on my cranium

Instead of topping off your tank, just drive 20 more miles before refueling. There is a big reserve to prevent running dry.
If you're not running the tank super low, why top off anyways? You're already not using the full range of the tank, so topping off just creates issues - air emissions, fuel spill potential, and potential EVAP damage. (n)

I am on vacation in Florida (live in Illinois) and the check engine light went on. I took my 2023 RAV4 Prime XSE to the local dealer and they told me it was an “evap - vap” error code. They reset it and said the car was safe to drive but said it might happen again. They had a call into Toyota but they hadn’t received a call back.We have to leave fo home so we couldn’t leave the car. Anybody else with a late model RAV4 Prime (2023) have this issue? I never “top off” when I refuel and stop when the nozzle clicks. I’m miffed when they said it might happen again. Note from dealer: “Check Engine light lit health check performed, evap codes stored, codes cleared, vehicle returned to owner.””

Tip: Make sure the Prime is fully powered off before, confirm a click when closing the cap, and do not top off.
Thank you. I fill the tank exactly like you stated but the Check Engine Light came on anyway (see previous posts in thread). That is what is puzzling.

Other than the gas cap not being properly tightened there are other things that will cause a check engine light relating to the EVAP system. The EVAP purge valve can malfunction or fail and a couple of posters had this happen in this forum on 5th gen RAVs. Also, it is always possible that there is a pinhole or small crack (even in new cars) in one of the MANY hoses running to the charcoal canister, and the purge valve. These EVAP hose vacuum leaks are nearly impossible to find and mechanics use a colored smoke machine. It pumps a special gas into the tank and when it leaks from a cracked or damaged hose then they can easily visually see a brightly colored stain where the leak is or the actual smoke coming out or sometimes the stain is fluorescent and they use an ultraviolet light to see where it is. With an EVAP leak there will ALWAYS be DTCs set which are easily found by an OBD2 scam. An advanced scanner or Techstream will have a code not only for the usual big or small generic EVAP leak codes but also for the specific RAV4 purge valve code if that is the problem.
