| They should never need to be replaced unless they get damaged by driving in heavy snow or offroading.

Heavy snow checks out as I only drove during the winter, mostly in town but also highway, no off-roading at all. Can't this --also -- be related to water infiltration caused by driving in rain or alike? At least that was my conclusion after reading thru these forums and these specific codes..

Yes it could but I don't think the system has any vents and if properly installed it should be impervious to any amount of water. If not we'd have a rash of such posts, especially with the recent flooding in parts of the US.

IMO, the system has to be physically damaged, not just soaked to have issues. That's why I bought and installed the protecting cover from a later year such as yours on my shockingly naked '06's recovery unit. (It must have been afraid  too from all the deep snow tests I put it thru while testing the 4WD years ago.)

Not to beat this thread into the ground, but....

Last night I drove through some deceptively deep water as a result of these Louisiana deluges we're experienced the past two-three days. CEL illuminated along with Trac Inop light. Cruise control also failed to work (when turned on, cruise control light would simply blink). Got my poor drowned rat home and threw the OBD on it and spit out P0607 and P1578.

Any ideas before I go play Russian roulette with the dealer?

Should mention that I've got a 2010 Base, about 62k miles on the odometer.

If you're really out of warranty, I'd wait it out, up to a week, see if CEL goes out by itself (of course, this needs some dry weather and sun to happen..:); if it stays on after a week I'd try to reset the light, wait again, if it comes back then ask the dealer's opinion.

EDIT: only found this older thread, there's also a quote for the repair: http://www.rav4world.com/forums/99-...-3-mechanical/149081-2010-rav4-cel-4wd-traction-control-light-when-raining.html

Just wanted to add my case to this list to help any who experience a similar problem to mine:

Driving around upstate New York in some recent slush/snow/freezing rain in my 2012 base model i4 4WD, just under 30K miles. Headed up a relatively steep backroad, about 8% grade, and started to get stuck. With the diff locked, I was able to drive out of it - but a sedan behind me wasn't so lucky.

When I got to the top of the hill, the famous CEL/VCS & 4WD lights were all on - or maybe they all came on when I was getting wheel spin as I got stuck initially. Got home safely, and I read this post (Thanks again JuneBug! Very helpful!) and I used the jumper method to see what the CEL was telling me. The CEL was flashing six times, pausing, and flashing 3 times, so it was either a code 63 or 36 (P0063 or P0036 ? If I interpreted these codes correctly), either way it points to something in the O2 sensor system.

When I started the car this morning to take it to the dealer, the lights were all gone! Still, I had the dealer check it out and they said it was Bank 1 Sensor 2, and they're going to replace it because it appears to be on its way out. I bought a OBD II code reader on amazon this morning as well, so I have it for future use.

I am curious, though; my car has relatively low milage - is the frozen weather of the north singularly enough to kill an O2 sensor on a car that has been fairly meticulously maintained and cared for? And what causes a sensor to go "bad" in the first place? My father drives a 2012 V6 Rav4 (not 4WD, he lives and works in the South) and he has about twice the milage and has never had any O2 problems.

Any thoughts you all have would be greatly appreciated!

I recently had the same warning lights come on today on my 2011 RAV4 V6 4WD. I did an OBDI error code check and got P0137. I need to take my RAV4 in for an oil change anyway. I have the Toyota extended warranty. If this truly is the O2 sensor, is this type of repair covered under warranty? Thanks!

Hey Pete,

Unfortunately, my O2 sensor replacement wasn't covered by warranty - $350 out of pocket to pay for the part and labor at the dealership (a lot, seeing as the part is <$100!).

I'm going to try and push my dealer on this, especially if it's not covered under warranty. It seems like the cost through independent shops is about $200. One thing I miss about dealers in Chicago is that they were always willing to negotiate price. Not so much in SoCal.

2008 Rav4 V6 Limited 4x4 with 92000 miles.

I tried pulling codes today with an OBDII code reader and got nothing. I need to do the paperclip option outlined but how are the pins numbered? Across then down and across again or top, bottom, top, bottom, etc..

My symptoms are it only acts up when in slushy snowy conditions. The 4x4 light will come on but not the CEL as best as I can remember. It will start surging the engine and I will see the tach jump a couple hundred rpm's at a regular interval. The headlights and dash lights will also dim at the same time.
On a very snowy morning I had it get to where the engine would not even speed up. I was just stuck there at an idle in the road for several minutes then it just started working again and the lights went out and I drove off.

Any ideas on where to start?

Check post #2 for a picture of the jumper in place. (The OBDII codes only come up with the MIL on.)
If all you had was the 4WD light in bad weather I'd suspect one of the ABS sensors since I replaced both of my rear ones.
But your other symptoms point to a weak battery. How new is the battery?
No matter if the car starts just fine. You can't trust that as an accurate indicator since it'll start seemingly normally until all of a sudden it doesn't.

Battery is maybe a year old.

Today I learned when you look at the forum not logged in you don't see pictures. I now see the obvious pic of the jumper. Now I feel dumb for asking

I certainly don't fault you for not reviewing 190+ posts to find the picture but I do think reading the Skid Control ECU codes is imperative since I've never heard of just the 4WD error light coming on by itself. A failing ABS sensor usually lights 3 or 4 indicators as it did in my case. Also note that the codes will remain until reset even tho the dash error lights may go out. (I can now "cheat" since I bought an Autel scanner that reads all vehicle codes and no longer have to count & interpret blink sequences.)

You are absolutely correct, and I tried to explain this to the OP in his "other" thread. In every case reported on this forum about the lights coming on, the following conclusion was made,

The CEL, VSC, and 4WD/TRAC lights on indicate a problem with the engine management system.

VSC, ABS (Antilock Braking System), BRAKE, and sometimes TRAC lights indicate a problem with the ABS system.

Also as I stated in the other thread, a single 4WD warning light indicates a problem with the "4WD" system.

As further proof I have attached the pertinent section from the owners manual.

Just to throw my personal experience here.

I got the dreaded check engine / VSC / 4WD lights on about a month ago.. Ran the scanner and found 1 code - P0606, which did not pin point what was specifically wrong.

I found that once in a while the lights will go away but it will come back an hour, a day later. It was always P0606.

I noticed about a week later that the lights no longer go away. Ran the scanner again and I got a new code in addition to P0606. P0137.

Googled that code and got this youtube video:

Got the Denso 234-4501 O2 sensor for my 07 V6, O2 socket and a can of PB blaster for around $70 on Amazon. I replaced the O2 sensor last Thursday and the lights have yet to return.

A big thanks to all the posters on this topic. With the detailed information here, I solved my problem myself and saved some money. My 2010 RAV4 base model had the check engine, AWD and Traction Control lights. It was almost time for the car to have its annual emissions test. The service advisor at my dealer wanted to charge $2600 to replace the evap. emissions canister assembly and the fuel tank.

After reading here, I decided to start by replacing only the leak detector vacuum pump. I was not positive that would solve the problem, but seemed like the most likely solution and the least expensive. The replacement was pretty easy. I cleared the codes on the OBD. After one month and almost a thousand miles, everything is still good.

I found the pump on ebay from AIP electronics for $70 delivered. I don't see it on ebay for that price now, but it is available directly from aipelectronics.com for that price.

I might have caused this problem in the first place, by overfilling the gas tank, something I have done for a long time. Lesson learned.

Thanks again!

Rain/humidity

I'll try to explain what is happening to my stock 2011 Limited Rav4. It all began with an heavy rain. My car was park at my house. That night, I noticed the lights flickering Inside my dash (like the ignition was turned on). Didn't make a case as it was late. Next morning, my battery was completely dead (boost did nothing). Had to tow the car to the garage... They changed the battery and everything was fine.

But the check engine, 4WD and VSC fun began at the next heavy rain. The scanner gave multiples codes ( P0138, P0504, P0607, U1201, B1421 and B1424). They just reset them and everything was fine for a couple of months (it was winter).

The lights came back with another heavy rain. Code were C1280, P0607, C1201, B1421, B1424. Reset again and said they will make research.

Lights came back for a 3rd time with, you guessed it, another rain. This time they disappear the same day. And this morning they are back (we had rain yesterday).

So it's pretty obvious that my problem is water/humidity getting somewhere, but where ?? I looked quickly this morning below the car and the engine and did not see anything suspicious (everything seems dry).

Any idea where to look ? Thanks
