Every time you start your RAV4, many of the warning lights on the instrument panel light up and then go out. This is part of a self-test to make sure that these important lights are functioning properly. But what happens when some of these lights DON'T turn off? What should you do if some of these lights come on while driving? Of course, in the case of the oil pressure or A/T Temp light you should stop the car before any serious damage is done. However, in the case of the Check Engine Light (CEL), there's no need to panic! The CEL is only telling you that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a fault. It could be something simple, like a loose gas cap or it could be something more serious.

Generally speaking, there are 2 different groups of lights that show up. The first scenario is when the CEL, VSC, and 4WD (TRAC in 2WD models) lights come on. The second scenario is when you see the VSC, ABS, and BRAKE lights on. Sometimes the 4WD or TRAC lights also show up. So why do all these lights come on at the same time and what do they mean? Let's take a look at each of these scenarios:

1. CEL, VSC, and 4WD/TRAC (Check Engine Light, Vehicle Stability Control, and 4-Wheel Drive/Traction Control

The CEL indicates that the ECM has stored a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and means something is not quite right in the engine. It could be any of a hundred different things such as a bad spark plug or coil causing a misfire to a bad oxygen (O2) sensor or yes, even a loose gas cap. Fortunately, the code can be read from the ECM with an OBDII tester and will usually point to the area of the problem and often to the specific part. But why would a CEL shut down the VSC or 4WD systems? Many of these features depend on the engine running at peak performance. The VSC for example, uses not only the braking system, but also controls the throttle to help get the RAV out of tricky situations. If the engine is not running right, the ECM shuts down those systems that would affected.

2. VSC, ABS (Antilock Braking System), BRAKE, and sometimes TRAC (skidding car icon)
Image

This series of lights indicate a problem with the braking system. The BRAKE light by itself means either the parking brake is on or the brake fluid level is low in the reservoir. But when the BRAKE light is on with these other lights, it's an ABS failure of some sort. In the vast majority of cases, this is usually caused by a bad or dirty wheel speed sensor. These sensors look somewhat like a bolt with wires on one end. The speed sensors detect the wheel speeds and send appropriate signals to the skid control ECU. Speed sensor rotors have rows of alternating N and S magnetic poles, and their magnetic fields change as the rotors turn. The speed sensors detect those magnetic changes and send pulse signals to the skid control ECU.
Image

The ECU monitors the wheel speeds through these pulse signals to control the ABS control system. But if there is snow/ice or mud on the sensor, it may not detect the pulse, and a code is set. HOWEVER, this code is not set in the ECM, it's set in the Skid Control ECU. Many code readers can't see these codes, because they're only designed to look for engine codes in the ECM. That's why a lot of people get frustrated when a mechanic or auto parts place tells them they have no codes even with 3 or 4 lights glowing on the dash! The wheel sensor isn't always the problem in this scenario--some owners have reported a problem with the brake pedal switch or a trailer wiring harness caused these lights to show up.

I went back through many of the old threads and compiled a listing of all the RAV4World users who reported these error lights. Out of the 41 users who had the first scenario with the CEL, 31% reported the cause as a bad or defective charcoal canister filter. A defective O2 or A/F sensor accounted for 24% of these reports. The infamous loose gas cap was attributed to 19% of the reports. As for the second scenario, I only found 8 reports and 63% of those turned out to be broken or defective wheel speed sensors. To view the listing which shows the user name, lights, codes, and eventual fix, download it here:

RAV4 Diagnostic Lights.pdf

Many thanks to fellow user RickL for compiling the list into a nice PDF for easy viewing.

Next, I'll show how to read and clear the diagnostic trouble codes with or without a code reader.

CEL VSC 4WD

I recently had my CEL VSC and 4WD lights turn on steady on my 06 rav4 v6 at 50,000km's , I took it into Toyota and they told me that my diagnostics was an ignition coil cylinder misfire #6 and 4 misfires on all 4 of my OCV's (oil control valves) Toyota said they could repair it at a cost of $900, $550 in parts. I read in recent articles that these lights can cause domino affects, like this one, I took out all my OCV's checked them thinking that 4 OEM parts would never fail, I was right they were all good and clean, I also read that these OCV's will actually cause your CEL to blink if they are malfunctioned, my CEL,VSC,4wd, stayed on steady. long story short I replaced only the ignition coil thinking that these 4 OCV's went off due to the gas in my #6 cylinder not being burned and being sent through these OCV's and I was right, I changed only the single ignition coil which took one second and it cleared all my CEL's, Toyota is too good to have 4 parts malfunction unless there was a power surge, so me myself have been a victim of the rav4 domino effect, Toyota has also reconditioned these ignition coils and have reported that they fail a lot less, they've been double sleaved to protect against heat. So b4 changing a bunch of parts due to the rav4 domino effect, sit back and trust your Toyota and fix only single broken parts like this one ignition coil that set off all 4 of my OCV's! I Hope this article helps somebody and thanks a lot to the people that posted on this subject, you helped me out a lot!

Good job, Okie, you saved yourself a lot of money by ignoring the dominoes and focusing on the root cause of the problem. It seems the coils have been redesigned at least twice since the '06 model year and they are failing less. Be aware, though, that if one coil failed, the others may not be far behind.

I had the same problem that Okie had. Saw all Check Eng, VSC and 4WD lights come on, and immediately thought it was something to do with my Typhoon intake. Cleaned the K&N Filter and cleaned the MAF 2x, and still nothing. Went to my local autozone to have them check the OBD codes. All 6 cylinders had a misfire and a bad ignition coil.

Brought it to my dealer, and they found ignition coils for cylinders 4 and 6 going bad. Once fixed, everything is all good

Lesson Learned? Always check those OBD codes... you never know what the problem may be ;)

tried the self test and this is what happened

Last night I too had the Check Engine Light/VSC & 4WD lights come on and won't go out. I tried the "jumper method" and came up with the following codes. 4WD= 82 VSC= 51 checkengine= 63 . I attempted to clear the codes by removing the 2 fuses and using the "jumper" method and pumping brakes as described above. I started car again and the same lights were on. I checked the codes again and now the checkengine blinks 2763 and the 4WD/VSC lights blink same codes as before. I also checked the gas cap and it was on tight. I did get the brake pads and rotors replaced a few months ago but have not had any issues since. Can someone tell me what they mean and how to fix? Thanks

You're kinda mixing your lights up.
The jumper is for reading codes when the CE isn't on. Ignore any jumper results or attempt to reset.

With the CE on you need a code reader to interpret the codes. The you reset the codes with the reader and see if they come back.

After you get them resolved you can go on to the non-CE codes.
When and if it's time to reset the non-CE codes you don't remove any fuses, just do the pedal dance with the jumper in place.

Thank you so much for this information. I also received a CEL,4WD,VSC lights at startup yesterday morning. I did go to Autozone to get the codes checked. Turns out that my air filter housing was not on correctly and a hose was loose. Fixed that and cleaned my MAF for good measure. Removed the fuses as listed in the Admins. post for 2 minutes and the lights are cleared.

my rav4 had the same problem been driving around with all three lights on then a couple days ago i notice that when i start the car and wanted to take it out of park it was not moving i had to be pressing the shift botton. yesterday i was driving the car around and i stop switch it off and when i tried stating it and it would not start i taught it was my battery so i got a jump and it started up ,, this morning i took my car to get the battery check and it was ok running strong so i took it to my electrician i told him i was having an ignition problem as my battery was fine he checked every relay and fuse all was well until i told him to check the switch that was on top of the break pedal , my rav is a push button start & stop while he was there checking the switch i notice i was getting the green light in the start button which was then going on an off , when hi did his check the switch was bad he pulled it up cleaned it up and then put it back in it started working fine all lights went away and i am now looking for where i can get a new switch to buy

lights out

My lights were on for about a week and then went out on their own. They have been out now for about 2 weeks. The lights are working because they light up during start-up. Should I be worried?

@brouillr, try this: http://www.rav4world.com/forums/877055-post2.html

My CEL, VSC and 4WD came on and went out several times over the last 6 months or so. Finally they stuck on. A little debug from the above link showed:
CEL 14, 93
P/S 41
VSC 51
4WD 82

I took a trip to my local autoparts store and they read code P0354 (ignition coil D). I swapped the coil pack in cylinder 4 (front middle) with the one in cylinder 6 (front drivers side) and the code changed to P0356. $85.99 later and a new coil pack in cylinder 6 - problem solved.

This goes to show that when the CEL is on the VSC & 4WD codes may be meaningless and just lead some people to chase dead ends.

I've been living with having these 4 dash lights come on intermittently for the past 2 winters.. always seemed to come on in cold weather and snow.. just when I needed 4wd, abs and traction control the most. About a month ago they were coming on daily and really drove me nuts. I finally jumpered the OBD2 port as per another thread on this forum.. and it turned out it was a fault in the right rear wheel speed sensor, which subsequently caused the abs to fail. I took the wheel off, removed the sensor and cleaned all the rust off the hub so the sensor sat flat when reinstalled, but this didnt help. I finally caved and bought a new sensor online. Installing the new one was a piece of cake. Dr. Dyno posted instructions somewhere on this forum.. and it only took me about 35 mins to do.. and I'm far from mechanically inclined. New sensor has been in for over a week now and so far no issues.. dash light problem is gone. yeehaw! dealer wanted 1hr to diagnose, 1.5 hrs to install + parts = roughly $500 +tax. I paid $169 for the part and installed myself.. saved a bundle.

Good move crisko!
I cleaned mine a couple of times and it did help. But, knowing I'd need a new one eventually I finally bought a new left rear ABS sensor online for about the $169 you paid. Had it for probably six months, laying around somewhere. The lights started coming on occasionally and the sensor made it's way out of the mess on the bench somehow, so I finally got it installed. As you mentioned not a big deal to install. Just have to use care removing the several small bolts that secure the wire out of harms way. No more lights. :)

Dr. Dyno you mention cleaning the hub and make it sound easy. Am I just not understanding an easier way to clean sensor rotor where the sensor sits? You have to pull the bearing hub, which requires messing with the peened axle nut and replacing it. Had to chase the threads on the spindle last time. If I have to do that again, definitely going to get the tool. I replaced a 270k bearing that seemed perfect but when I pulled the hub the rotor on the CV looked spent. The sensor is not too in cost off the internet and easy enough to replace but I believe the CV axle has to be replaced to fix the speed sensor rotor. I think I should have drilled out the axle nut and spindle for a cotter that the engineers should have put in it instead of peening it.

Any thoughts?

Thank you sooo much! I read all your stuff.

Less than a month old and 1000 miles, and with the first good rain my new rav4 is exhibiting these same old problems- abs, brake, skid, and vsc lights stuck on. I am not impressed that Toyota cannot do any better than this after all the years of known problems, and more disgusted with my dealer who says they cannot look at it for 6 days. I was going up to the snow this weekend but not with dubious braking and traction control systems. I expected better when I bought a new Toyota.

I shorted pins 4-13 on the obd and the codes displayed do not seem to be in the list posted here. I'm going to have to see if I can upgrade the firmware in my old auto x-ray to work on this car. If this is a dirty wheel sensor issue I should probably just sell the car now as I know it will be an endless problem. If I can't drive in a little mud what good is 4WD?

Out of the blue today my 2006 Rav4 Limited (52K miles) threw the CEL/VSC/4WD trio. When I parked the car after a short drive down the highway it was fine... got in a few hours later and was greeted by the Check Engine light and its dubious friends.

I reset the system (using the fuse method) and tightened the gas cap just in case but it threw them again a few hundred feet down the road. Read the blink codes... this is where it gets interesting:

CC=69, CEL=15, AIR=43, VSC=51, 4WD=82

I figure most of them are cascading codes: it's the Check Engine Light code that's puzzling... from everything I've read there is no code 15 for a Toyota Rav4, and I checked it several times (it just keeps repeating "15"... with the same long pause between "15"s).

Your thoughts? I'm going to take it in later today or tomorrow and pray my Toyota Platinum extended warranty covers whatever is going on... I've read enough horror stories already about evap canisters and the like.

I was able to solve the problem in my new car with the help of the obd2 codes. The connector to the stop lamp relay was not seated. I would have preferred that the dealer not make it necessary for me to do it myself by having such a long delay for service, but this time it was easy.

Does the 2009 RAv4 has an EGR valve, and if it does where should I look for in the engine, is there any link, where I can get the diagranm for the engine, even if it is with a charge,2009 rav4 is giving me very, but very poor gas milage, i got the injector clean, and it improve a little, so I want to clean things like the MAF, I seen in youtube they talk about the EGR, and I see it in older Rav4s, but I do not see anything with that shape in my Rav4, it may look different(newer version) I will take on this task, and then change the injectors, Help Please.....!
Location of EGR, 2009 Rav4

You can add me to the list for the CEL, VSC, and 4WD lights on two occasions. The first was accompanied by a P0353 code and was remedied by replacing the #3 ignition coil. The second time around was accompanied by a P0351 code and was resolved by replacing the #1 ignition coil. This is for a 2006 RAV4 AWD with the V6.

Wow you only have P0352,4,5 & 6 to go.

Had the VSC, Brake & ABS - combo warning. Thanks to James (junebug1701) i was able to confirm the error 49. This points to several potential problems: brake fluid levels; speed sensors; ABS / VSC actuator or brake light switch.
Read on another Forum a report by bezzer with ref to diagnosis; ordering replacement part & fitting.
A couple of weeks a go on my way out of the drive i stopped & put my hand up under dash to try & tap the item. This stopped the fault reappearing until this morning when i descended a steep & rough mountain lane.
My repacement part from ebay was on my desk so i've just fitted the brake light switch (1/2 hour job). The error is now hopefully banished for good.
Thanks James for putting me on the right path.

Today the CEL, VSC and 4WD lights came on in my 2007 V6 Limited. Initially I felt no change in the cars behaviour. After parking the car to do some shopping for about an hour I started it up and the lights were still on. As I pulled out into traffic at about 40kms/hr the car suddenly started revving loudly as though it had just popped out of gear. I let the revs fall and the car coast a bit and then I could drive it again. This started happening repeatedly on my way home. The car slips out of gear, I let the revs fall and it re-engages. I also noticed that the radio is no longer working either.

I'm taking in to a local mechanic tomorrow morning. Can someone please give me a heads up as to what this might be? Or what I should be aware of when he starts checking the codes?

Could this be a dying transmission? The car is barely 6 years old with 120,000 kms on it.How long is the powertrain warranty on the RAV4 in Canada? Just in case...

Thanks for any feedback!

It's possible that they did something to one of the wheel speed sensors when servicing the brakes. But without checking the codes, it could be anything from a loose gas cap to a bad brake pedal switch.
