Cold start, rough idling, and check engine light

This morning it was 11 degrees F outside (very unusual where we live) and I went outside to crank my 2007 Rav4 Limited w/V6. It sounded a little rough when I first started it but didn't think anything of it so I went back inside the house and waited about 20 min. When I came back outside to take my son to daycare I noticed the Rav4 was idling a little rough, the check engine light was flashing, the VAC light was on, and the DAC symbol was on. I drove about a mile down the road and dropped my son off at daycare and on the way there I tried to get a little speed up to see if I could help it warm up a little more. I had the pedal on the floor and the most it would do is 40 mph. After I dropped my son off I got back in my Rav4 and started it up and all the lights were off and the rough idling was gone. WTH? Is this like a Windows thing where you get glitches and just need to reset? I'm thankful that it's working fine now but I don't want to get caught with my pants down later if there is a more serious problem I need to be aware of.

Check engine light flashing is never good! If it's solid, you can usually wait a little bit to see what's going on. This happened to me in my old Honda Civic and it turned out to be just a loose spark plug wire. You may want to check that. I'm not sure if the 07's have a distributor cap and rotor, if so, check that as well. Glad it went out, but seriously when the Check engine light flashes, it could do damage to the car if you drive.

If warning lights were flashing, the error condition code is stored in the system and can be retrieved. But in general it is never a good idea to leave a vehicle idling for that length of time.

-15F here and I may warm the car for 2 min at the most. The RAV heats pretty fast, even for an I4.
Like others have said, get the code read .. for free from an Auto store or get your own cheap reader from Amazon.

May be an ignition coil or a sensor going bad.

I had a similar situation here on Sunday. We had had snow and ice and very cold temperatures.

Check engine light was flashing, the 4WD and TRAC, I think, were on. Idling was rough.

I drove about 1/2 mile, went inside on an errand. When I came out and restarted the car, all was fine. No lights and the car was running smoothly.

I'm thinking ice had gotten on a wheel sensor, or some other sensor, and got dislodged by driving around. It's Thursday, and everything is still fine.

I tried getting a code with my Actron scanner, but it couldn't read anything. I kept getting a connection error. When I have more time, I'll hook up the Techstream and see what it reads.
