We have all been waiting to see what would happen in Barrientos v. Toyota--the class action lawsuit for the coolant bypass valve. I obtained a PACER.gov account and got access to the docket for the Federal Court for the Northern District of California. The class action lawsuit for the coolant bypass valve has been officially dismissed and the case closed. NOTHING in the court records explains why it happened. The plaintiff dismissed voluntarily and Toyota NEVER responded to the complaint. As we now know on Dec.5, 2024 Toyota issued the Customer Support Program 24TE04 for a free repair of the coolant bypass valve on specified RAV4s made before Feb of 2021. The Barrientos v. Toyota class action was dismissed on 8-26-24. I think at the initial case management conference with the Judge in July a deal was worked out. I would bet Toyota paid off the plaintiff and his attorneys and agreed to the CSP for everyone else. So anyone with a RAV made after Feb. 2021 is sh*t out of luck if the coolant bypass valve fails. Here is the Dismissal of the case and the full Docket that lists all documents and proceedings in the case.

Hey folks - I'm literally sitting in a Florida Toyota dealership typing this. I just pulled up because the other day the service advisor said that "if there's a leak detected" they would work on fixing the coolant bypass valve issue at no charge - per that new bulletin someone posted about earlier (24TE04). But when I pulled in this morning they told me that they "just had a meeting" to get an update on the situation and that as of now as long as the vehicle is showing the message on the dash and throwing the code, they're fixing everyone's for free. Check in with your local dealer!

I have a 2021 RAV4.
Look at the plaque inside the drivers door frame. It says the month and year your '21 was built. NO dealer will do the CSP unless the MID screen has the warning "ENGINE Maintenance Required" and the RAV was built before February of 2021. Leaking is NOT a requirement.
Well, somehow they just did it for me at no charge. I have a 2021 RAV4. And they said the CBV wasn't leaking. I dunno if it's a dealer-by-dealer thing or something that just literally rolled out but folks should check just in case.
I dunno if it's a dealer-by-dealer thing
NO it is NOT. The rules for CSPs and TSBs are well known to ALL Toyota dealers. Your repair order indicates your dealer installed the OLD part # coolant bypass valve which is WRONG!! There is a NEW different part # in the CSP.
