Hi all, bought my 99 Rav4 last week, had a nice week of using it and today my drum backing plate on the driver's rear has appeared to have collapsed, I haven't removed and inspected yet but from underneath you can clearly see a large hole at the bottom of the backing plate where I assume the pivot point for the brake shoes is supposed to be. After hours of searching the internet I cannot find a replacement for this backing plate at all. Obviously I'll have to get in touch with some of the local breakers this week but I feel like the chances of finding what I need there in reasonable condition is slim. So here's what I have to ask..

1. Does anyone know where I might be able to source one?
2. Would a backing plate from a later model R4 fit and where I could source one?
3. Are there any other vehicles that I could get one off that may fit?
4. Am i plumb out of luck and should be considering scrapping her?

Here's a link to parts.toyota.com: Backing Plate. They don't show as unavailable, so it would appear that you could buy them new from Toyota USA if your British model Rav4 uses that same part. Have you tried to order them at a local Toyota dealer?
Thank you! I haven't tried Toyota yet mainly because I don't wanna be charged through the nose for one. I'm hoping that they'll be the same as the US ones. I may get in touch with Toyota to see if I can get a part number, hopefully it'll match the one in the link you've provided and I'll be able to order one online. I'm also going to try one of the local motor factors tomorrow to see if they can get one for me, I'll more than likely need the whole lot so the cheaper I can source the parts the better. Thanks for your help 👌🏻

Hi Matthew,
I bought a set of factory original plates for my 98 Rav4 about 2 years ago from my local Toyota dealership, you should check with your Toyota dealer for sure. I don't think they were very expensive, maybe $125.00 Canadian for the pair if I remember right.
They will have a RH and a LH part number. I still need to replace the old ones on my Rav4, they are pretty crusty
I would be interested to see how you make out changing yours

If your Rav4 is 2 wheel drive, replacing the backing plate is easy, all wheel drive is a little harder.
On the all wheel drive models, the backing plate is installed between the wheel bearing and the wheel hub before they are pressed together. I replaced the bearings in mine in my front yard. Getting the backing plate out takes some work, but can be done with hand tools.

New back plates would make the AWD rear-wheel bearing change much easier if you add new hubs to the parts list.
The hard part of the wheel bearing change, is getting the backplate out to re-use it. Having a shop press the new hubs, into the new bearing, with the plate between them is a quick 3 minute job. From there the bearing change is a simple bolt in!
