ECM/Transmission problem for 2001-2003 RAV4

New owner of a 2001 RAV4 with 135k miles and no observable transmission problems

1. Added the car to my Toyota Owner's Circle and it indicate the 60I ECM Reprogram hasn't been done. Will be scheduling this soon

2. After 60I ECM has been done, I'd like to get a preventive ECM rebuild to avoid damaging the transmission in the future. Is this necessary after the 60I ECM reprogram? I would guess it is desirable unless the reprogram somehow worked around the weakness in the soldering on the circuit board. Seems rather doubtful the reprogram worked around the poor solder joint problems.

UPDATE: Had the 60I ECM reprogram done today. I learned the rebuild involved at a minimum some solder joint touch up which program update likely can't work around. I'll go ahead and get the rebuild done.

I have a 2002 rav4 under 80k miles, having the issue right now. Since its over 10 year old does that mean toyota no longer cover it?
Take it in and see what the dealers say. They will at least do the 60I ECM UPDATE for free. Ask them what Toyota will do about the ECM failure causing shift problems. With 80k miles and just 1 year out of extended warranty, they might extend some good will. If the dealer don't help you out, ask for the regional customer service rep's contact. They have more power to give out good will.

Good luck

Hey All ,

I had this problem last weekend - 2002 Rav4 AT - with 129,000 miles.

Lucky for me this happened near my house - less than a mile away. Got home and parked car - haven't drive it since. Towed to dealer who told me that I was out of warranty - love that BS and need new ECM.

Original part # was 89661-42820. Told replacement was same #.

I was like what? Huh? - the TSB says 04009-39542

I called another dealership and they told me based on VIN that it should be 89661-42822 (I would be buying part wholesale).

Anybody have information on this - and what the correct part # should be.

Thanks for all your help.

P.S. - Anybody on LI can recommend a good Toyota Dealership as well - my local one sucks.
Toyota parts listing shows 42822 is the new part number and supercedes 42820

04009-39542 is a lot cheaper

Camelback Toyota has one of the lowest prices online. You might call them and ask if 04009-39542 is applicable and why so much cheaper.

Curious why you aren't thinking of just repairing it for $100+
