I wanted something to read codes from my 2003 2.0 D4D, so i bought the ELM 327 reader that can handle almost every protocol.

I've tried and tried using scantool.net, but the device gives me an error that sais "protocol not detected", even though toyota use the ISO protocol that my ELM device should be able to read... What do I do wrong?

All I've done is to connect the plugs in the correct sockets, turned on the computer and installed the ELM. I've even tried every possible RS232-setting.

Any input would be highly appreciated!

I doubt there is a problem with the elm 327 unit not reading a protocol or with scan tools. The problem is likely with the computers blue tooth or USB link. You did not say if you are using a blue tooth or USB unit. If it is blue tooth it's mostly likely your computers blue tooth driver. Usually problems with these devices are in the link from the OBD reader to the computer. If you have an android phone I strongly recommend the torq app by Ian Hawkins, it's an amazing application. I hope you get your unit working as I really like yours p.s. I am so envious of the d4d which I can not have in USA.

Kaushalye - try asking on the torq app forums. Just google it. Tons of professional mechanics and car tuners lurking there.

The elm 327 won't work with the pre 2004 d4d

I have used my 327 for years on other cars just got a Rav 4 d4d face lift 2002 and found out after trying it about ten times that it won't read the codes on the pre 2004 models. Anything after 2004 it will work on just not the diesels before 2004. I thought I was going crazy tried it about 50 times. :surprise:mad:
