Waiting for the dealer to open to drop the RAV off for the following error:

"Malfunction in the Electronic Control of the engine, throttle or automatic transmission has been detected. Contact your Toyota dealer to have your vehicle inspected"

Has anyone else experienced this? what was the outcome? how many down days?

So you do not have a OBDII scanner?

Times like these, one is of tremendous value. I've got the Bluedriver and the Carista.

If I encountered the scenario you are in, I would absolutely want to know what had malfunctioned and what the code was.

I have had less than happy experiences with Toyota Dealership Service Departments . . . . . given the dearth of knowledgeable people in the Dealership Service Departments (that I have experienced) . . . . I would be walking up to the Service Adviser with as much (if not more) knowledge than anyone there.

Okay, maybe "dearth" of knowledge isn't quite fair or reasonable.

Care, conscientious, fastidious, integrity, honesty, competent, now those are good descriptors for what is not in abundance.

If there is no other 'contributing' event that could account for your message? I would spit-ball a serious ECM failure. No Christmas Tree light show behavior from your MID panel?

Did you ever sort this problem out? Or did you settle an arbitration? Mines currently had 3 malfunctions and it's been down for about two weeks. The technicians have no clue what's going on and have been little to no help. It's a 2021 LE rav4 with only 3300 miles.

My 2019 rav4 hybrid straight up died on me while on the freeway with this error. First it flashed an error about the hybrid system malfunction now its this one. Dropped it off for repair, they said it was fixed! I drive around the corner and it dies again! I seriously don't trust the rav4 or the service center repairing it anymore. Still waiting to hear back from them on next steps. Seriously considering arbitration.

For "normal" maintenance, Toyota dealers seem to be ok. For anything out of the ordinary, they often are incompetent... For solving intermittent problems, they (Toyota Dealer's) seem to lack in basic common sense..

If it isn't a loose connector, or sensor, then probably one of the computer modules is at fault. Dealers seem to not like replacing computer modules (especially when under warranty) because of the cost of the computer module..........

If people only knew how difficult and frustrating it is sometimes for service people to find an intermittent fault in something as complex as a modern automobile. Complete failures are relatively easy to diagnose and when fixed that's it but intermittent electrical/electronics faults can defy troubleshooting by even the most experienced mechanic and reappear at the most inopportune time. As long as the dealer is making an honest attempt to fix it and offers a loaner in the meantime then patience is a virtue.

For anything beyond normal maintenance, Toyota has a system where the dealer service department consults regional experts who are there to help on the really hard problems. A while back I had a unique problem, not even a google search of the 'net could find any mention of it. Left me stranded and unable to start several times. Lucky that twice I was just across the street from the dealership. I had a good service rep and we had discussions with the service manager and then the customer relations manager and they consulted up the chain. I have a feeling that the expert just happened to drop in. Get that started. Or ask for the car to be bought back and/or exchanged for the next one they get in. No yelling, just make it clear that everyone understands it is their problem. And that you are active on social media.

My issue ended up ( so far ) being tied to the low pressure fuel pump replacement that was a convenience recall. Whatever the case something went wrong with the float in the fuel tank and the rav thought it had more gas than it actually did. I guess I was running on fumes and the whole system went haywire as a result. Service gave me the green light and sent me on my way, but it died again right around the corner!!!! Anyway, new fuel pump , new low pressure fuel pump, and a new float , and a quarter tank of gas. Crossing my fingers now.

That is not a convenience recall as failure can leave you stranded. Not as bad as if it happened on an ICE car as after failure you can get to the side of the road...if you aren't a million miles from a cell tower etc.

We go last because ICE car failures can kill people with more probability. They actually self describe the groups of cars they asked to come in as "waves". They must have more parts now.

Got my letter Saturday. Calling tomorrow.

. . . wait . . . wut?

You have a '19 RAV4 Hybrid and you received a letter from Toyota regarding the fuel pump and a replacement program? I'm asking because I've checked for TSB's and other bread crumbs and found nothing. I'm interested as I have a '19; rolled off the line in Japan mid-July '19. I have had the tank, sending unit and gasket replaced this past May.

I got a letter (three pages) Saturday describing a Special Service Campaign for my Rav4h VIN that speaks to several other models (all hybrids) specifically including "Certain 2019 Model Year RAV4 Hybrid". Specific in the letter. Nothing referring to any VIN or build date range of cars eligible in the letter. No reference to any factory in the letter. I looked. All models in this wave were in the 2017 to 2019 range and all were hybrids. My guess is hybrids can run for a bit on battery to get you to the side of the road safely which is why we are last or near last

They also described, on the second page, how California required you to have the Recall done. I have no idea why they are calling this a Special Service Campaign as opposed to a Recall but I'll bet their lawyers know. Looking at prior TSB documentation on the same problem in other models I do see where they have made many models and years eligible on different dates in what they self describe as "waves" and in mid year they were in the 13th wave. I presume this is to not overwhelm dealer's maintenance staff and parts availability by dumping 8 years of all models on them all at once.

When I went in to my long time service advisor, he knew all about the issue. And when I said I wanted to schedule an appointment only when he had the parts, he offered me the next day. I elected Thursday early AM drop off Wed night after hours. I'll know more late in the week.

Curiously, the NHTSA web site shows no unrepaired recalls for my VIN.

Had you had the fuel tank and float replacement done or was yours one of the later cars that didn't need that fix (in theory anyway)?

"Put my two cents in"
As know, Toyota has T-SB-0109-20 ("Vehicle Refueling Performance") for the 2019 - 2021MY RAV4 HV.
Some 2019 – 2021 model year RAV4 Hybrid vehicles may experience one or both of the following conditions:
- The fuel gauge displays less than full when the fuel nozzle automatically clicks off.
- The total amount of fuel dispensed while refueling is less than expected when the fuel nozzle automatically clicks off.
Additionally, the distance to empty mileage displayed on the Multi-Information Display (MID) may be less than expected. To address these concerns a new fuel tank and fuel sender gauge were developed. Based on production location and timing, some vehicles may already have the updated fuel tank and/or fuel sender gauge installed. In cases where these vehicles exhibit this condition only replace the necessary pre-countermeasure part.
Refer to the Production Change Information section in this bulletin to identify which group the vehicle belongs to and follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin to address these conditions.

Mike,
Thank you.
Standing by for more information.
My BlueDriver OBDII scanner shows a high pressure fuel rail and a low pressure fuel rail . . . . . for the direct Injectors and the port injectors respectively. Two discreet pumps?

I have had the same error message on my Rav 4 2021 Prime. I purchased it in May and it happened n February and it happened last week, April 13. It has been at the dealer since then. I will let you know what they come up with.

i just purchased a used rav 4 prime with 28000. It’s a great car , but I just found vehicle warning notice for the malfunction of the electronic control throttle or auto transmission today and I haven’t gone 100 miles yet. Going to the dealers service department on Monday, wish me luck!
