Only complaint I have is the jerky transmission on take off. For example, when you stop at a stop sign and then take off it's like it can't decide on 1st or 2nd gear. That and the drivers side mirror, which feels disorienting, is all the complaints I have as of now. Love the new ride!

My 2019 Limited AWD(Japan) is currently in the shop with the clunking sound from the rear. They were able to diagnose that with a bad transfer case and is waiting for the part right now.

However, i also have an AC high pitched squeal that was determined to be normal when they compared it to another RAV4 they had in the shop. I'm not sure about that since it started recently.
Also have a faint buzzing sound from the engine bay when stepping on the gas. It's easy to replicate if you open the hood and rev the car up. That was also said to be normal due to direct injection.
I feel like these sound issues started happening after the brake assist kicked in when my front end got too close to a wall.

I have the hesitating/lurching transmission issue. And I find the engine noise while accelerating annoying. I contacted Toyota and had the Service Manager at my dealer check it out. I was basically told to wait for Toyota to do something about it.

I also logged the issues at carcomplaints.com, although it will probably be a day or 2 before they post it.

My passenger side mirror squeaking, cracking or what ever you want to call is starting to drive me insane. It used to vibrate only when hitting bumps but now it constantly vibrate and sound like cheap plastic cracking inside the cabin as soon as I hit 70km/h or more. Got in an argument with my local dealer about this where they admit they can replicate the problem but since I am not the only one with this defect, they have to submit a case to the Toyota engineer to find a solution.

Not sure what there is to engineer about a defective mirror housing that crack and squeaks due to vibration. You simply change it imo.

Was basically told they won't do anything about it until the engineers figure how to fix it. and was told it could take months and maybe up to a year. Hoping this goes away with hotter climate or I'll might have to open the housing my-self and fix it.

Not impressed by the whole we can't fix something if Toyota says it's working as intended.

I am in the same exact situation as you. Both side mirrors shake like CRAZY. The service dept. is refusing to do anything and manufacturing will only wait until engineering develops a fix. This is extremely concerning as my vibration is so bad now (it's gradually getting worse and worse) that I can't use them anymore.

I also have the deep clicking/clunking sound in the rear.

I am so incredibly frustrated. Manufacturing is actually advising I file lemon law paperwork and the dealer is trying to rip me off with a trade in for a Camry. I'm like "Fix my damn mirrors!"

I actually deem it a safety concern because it deflects healdlights at night into my line of vision while driving. Also, I just can't use them for lane changing. Anyone and everyone who has this problem needs to create a case with corporate and escalate. This is a pretty cruddy screwup from such a reliable manufacturer (and also the only reason I decided to register and post)

I hear you buddy, I guess I am lucky in my bad luck with my mirror in a way that I could be worse. I mean it only cracks but does not shake/vibrate in a way that I cannot use them.

I know when good weather hit my area, I will be disassembling the mirror and find a fix my-self if I haven't heard from the dealer.

It just drives me nuts how dealers are tied down by what Toyota says. Coming from Kia/Hyundai, I had a lot of those vibration issue and they would simply replace the part and not even make a sting about it. If the replacement part did the same thing, they would found a way to make it stop.

It just drives me insane how a 30 grand car has issue with cracking plastic.

Agreed. I’m actually dropping it off at the dealer again for another go after I rode along for a like model comparison(again) and the issue isn’t happening in other XLEs. They’re making this way more difficult than it needs to be.

Weird fact, it started cracking the next day that I used my heated mirror. It also crack less when it's hot outside so it's definitely an issue with plastic extension due to temperature. Probably fixable by putting a 2way tape somewhere lol.

Brought it to my dealers attention early January and was told Toyota is already aware and are working on a ECU update (Software) that ''should'' fix the issue. I've been calling Toyota Canada every week since then to get an update. If more people call, it will put some kind of pressure. If you plan on calling, make sure your dealer diagnostic the issue and send's a report to Toyota.

I found a temporary fix for my issue though, when I am city driving and I know i'll have a lot of stop and go, I drive with the snow mode on. Issue is 90% gone this way.
Can you provide any further information that I might be able to reference when I get back in touch with Toyota Care down here in the US? I have a hard downshift to first when coming to a complete stop, and also the "coast, go, and jerk" issue at lower speeds. I just had a Toyota Specialist look at it and he declared my vehicle to be fine in spite of the fact that he experienced said issues. TC followed up and told me that Toyota's position is that there is nothing wrong with my vehicle. What a bunch of bull poop. Also had the service manager angrily tell me that my vehicle was "sound" and I needed to end my conversation w/ the Specialist and let him get on with his day. Nice...

My Rav is an LE AWD, Japanese built, completed early to mid December '18.

1. Pronounced bump feeling and sound when vehicle is brought to a stop when it is operated in colder temperatures (approx. lower than 50 degrees Fahrenheit) and before it has been running at operating temperatures for an amount of time. Typically, this does not occur after about 10 to 15 minutes of driving. This appears to be a “hard shift” into first gear, right as the vehicle is coming to a stop at approximately 3-4 mph. I have experienced this hard downshift in both the “eco” and “sport” drive modes as well as the default “normal” drive mode that I always use.

Additionally, I have noticed what seem to be hard shifts while driving, after the vehicle has been driven for some time. It occurs randomly and at various speeds and is somewhat subtle.

On occasion I still experience a “whiplash” type of effect in the drivetrain at lower speeds when either coasting, or lightly braking as if I might come to a stop, but then lightly accelerate instead. This experience was really bad during the first week or two of ownership. There seemed to be a lot of “uncertainty” in the powertrain for lack of a better description. The Toyota specialist that I just had an appointment with captured data on a test drive and told me the shifting issues occurred when the transmission was shifting from 3rd to 1st. I also experienced a dozen or so times that the engine “stumbled” as if it were going to shut off when coming to a stop, right before the vehicle actually came to a stop. This occurred whether or not the engine stop/start system was active. I have not experienced this “engine stumbling” after approximately the first week and a half.

2. Lingering odor that is NOT normal “new car” smell. To me, the odor smells somewhat like cedar wood, but is not pleasant. It is an irritant, where I’ve experienced a drying sensation and sometimes itching in my nasal passages. Others (family members, friends) have stated they can smell it, but do not think it smells like cedar OR typical new car odor. This smell appears ONLY when the vehicle has been running and typically with the heat setting between medium to high. It was very strong and unpleasant when I entered the vehicle for the first time for a test drive at the dealership. The salesman dismissed it simply as “new car smell” that would go away. This odor has dropped in intensity, but it is still occurring. On a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 = no smell and 10 is the worst I’ve experienced, it is typically around 2 or 3, with it sometimes spiking at around 4 or 5. It’s not always noticeable.

3. Lingering burning plastic type of smell in the engine compartment. This odor is no longer always noticeable when standing by the front of the vehicle, but it still has appeared recently at lower levels. It appears to be coming from the front driver’s side of the vehicle, somewhere around the large fuse box in the engine compartment. This odor was very strong on the initial drive home from the dealership. After about 45 minutes of driving I stopped and opened the hood and was overwhelmed by a heavy smell that was like plastic that was actually burning. It seemed to be coming from the area indicated above, but I did not observe anything out of the ordinary. Over the next few days, this odor reoccurred on several occasions and was fairly strong, albeit not as bad as the initial occurrence. Since then, I’ve noticed it at least half a dozen times at low to faint levels. This could be linked to the unpleasant odor I’m experiencing in the cabin of the vehicle, or at least be drawn into the vehicle exposing me to something that could adversely affect my health.

4. Driver’s side mirror was replaced due to a defect that caused image distortion and difficulty viewing objects in the mirror. The replacement is better, but still exhibits distortion of objects, especially towards the top corner nearest the vehicle. The passenger mirror does not exhibit this distortion, nor does the driver’s mirrors on other vehicles I’ve driven.

5. The RPM needle twitches frequently (slight up and down motions) when the engine is started cold (approx. 50 and under). I did not observe this in the FWD model I test drove, or the Canadian built Adventure. Two other LE Japanese vehicles I test drove the other day while back at the dealership did exhibit this behavior.

6. Slight tapping or light knocking sound when engine is first started cold (approx. 50 and under). This does not seem to be the sound of the injectors; it sounds more like a mechanical sound that might be caused by excessive clearance or lack of lubrication. This noise goes away after 5 minutes or so of run time. The two other J-spec Ravs I just mentioned in #5 exhibited the same sound. The 2019 Adventure didn't from what I recall. Is it a problem, who knows, time will tell.

7. Driver’s door lock sometimes makes an unusual noise when locked or unlocked. This occurs maybe 30-40% of the time. Instead of the normal, clear, crisp click/clunk sound you would expect, there is sometimes a rubbing type of sound from the driver’s locking mechanism.

8. Tens of thousands of “micro abrasions” on the windshield that are noticeable really only when the sun is low on the horizon (or any strong, concentrated light source is shown at the right angle). I noticed this a few times driving home in the late afternoon when the sun was shining right into the windshield. The micro abrasions scatter the light making it that much harder to see. Although I noticed this effect on the new ’19 Rav4 Adventure that I drove, I do not recall this on other newer vehicles that I’ve driven. This is typically what you would experience with an older windshield that has been “sandblasted” by exposure to many years of road debris.

9. There is a low whistling, or “moaning” type of sound that has appeared from the engine compartment about a week or two ago when the engine is running. It comes and goes and is definitely noticeable when the vehicle is stopped and the engine is idling. It seems to also occur while driving, but I am not sure if that is what I’m hearing. Either way, it is a bit annoying.

10. The hood alignment with the rest of the body panels leaves a bit to be desired. Essentially, the edges do not line up properly with the adjacent top edge of either the driver or passenger side quarter panels. It’s not horrible, but enough to be a bit “tacky”.

Understand your frustration. My tech said that it was working as intended since just like you, other are experiencing the same issue. When they say working as intended, IMO it means that it is working in the way it is supposed to work when it leave the factory.

The way I see it and was confirmed by my tech is that: It is working how it is supposed to work, but that does not mean it cannot be improved in the future. I did not get a clear confirmation when I called the Toyota Canada line if a fix was indeed coming, but the lady told me that Toyota was made aware of similar complaints and are looking into it.

Just an FYI, the more kms i put on my Rav, the better it gets to be honest. It used to be a very solid and constant jerk/downshift that I was able to replicate 100% of the time and now it seems to happen only 50% of the time. So I dont know lol.

Japanese built, LE awd. purchased mid February.

Transmission lurch: Have had the transmission lurch from a near stop to a go. the lurch is violent and will actually spin the front tires. Have opened a case with Toyota. Dealer did diagnose the problem and provided technical language describing the problem in some detail, but as others have said, it is "normal". Really not acceptable in a new vehicle.

Distorted driver side mirror: Dealer also acknowledged problem, but again "normal".

Rear seat chimes: Rear seat alarm will randomly go off, requiring that I pull over and buckle up the rear seat belts. Haven't reported this yet to the dealer since the first two are a priority for me.

wind noise: severe enough that it sounds as if a winder is open on the passenger side of the vehicle.

new to the forum, hello everyone!

Ouch! And hello. Boy, I surely didn't expect this back when I was watching those introductory videos Toyota released. I thought I'd be getting a gem after watching the commercials...

I have same "shaking mirrors" issue with my XSE!
I'm calling Toyota and advise all other owners to do the same.

XSE (Japan), less than a week old and under 100 driven:

1) Auto door locks not engaging. Was preset to Shift from park - doesn't work. Tried Speed setting and went up to 50mph - doesn't work. Tried setting it to Off then back to either of the other settings - doesn't work.

2) Auto lights don't always work - fails maybe 20% of the time. I park in a garage so the lights automatically turn on when I start. Sunny day, cloudy, or overcast - the headlights don't always turn off even after several minutes of driving. DRL's don't always turn on either. If I manually set them, they work.

3) Pre-collision detection - false alarms when going up hill while facing the sun. 3 beeps and the red brake indicator goes off at every intersection/stop sign under those conditions.

4) Holding unlock button on remote does not roll down all windows and sunroof. Hopefully its just because it wasn't pre-programmed.

5) Clock returns to 24-hour mode every couple of days even though I set it for 12-hours.

6) Entune app - 'nuff sed.

Not defects - more like quirks:

a) Silver trim around window air vent reflects in driver side mirror. Very distracting since I think something is coming up along my side. And during lane changes, my eyes are drawn to the reflection first.

b) Physically checking if I locked my doors. I had gotten into the habit of confirming if my doors are locked after a couple of thefts stemming from my own carelessness. Of course, putting my hand around the handle unlocks my door. Silly me....

c) No lock for glove compartment. Again, after thefts, I got used to keeping my glove compartment locked in my old car. Not having a lock on this car is a bit disappointing.

I have the transmission hard shift coming to a complete stop from 2-1. Goes away after 10-15 mins when are gets warm. Also have the rolling stop delay. Toyota case manager is not doing anything about it. Regret buying this car.
